    Tedious, pointless sequel. hide show

The first season episode "The Battle" was by no means a classic episode, but it was among the highlights of a pretty weak season. Unfortunately, its sequel doesn't deserve even that much credit.

This episode isn't painfully bad, but Picard's "son" is an arrogant twit and we're really banking on Patrick Stewart to carry things. He does an OK job (including a good joke about his son's hairline), but ultimately an episode that could have given some insight into Picard's character completely fails to do so.

The Ferengi subplot is meant to inject some excitment, but just reminds us why the Ferengi were much better as comic relief than evil adversaries.

  • Somehow Bok secretly beams in and out of Picard's quarters without his transporter beam lighting up the room (it does later in the episode once we and Picard know what he's up to). []
  • Bok's plan doesn't make much sense. He had to find someone who had an affair with Picard and another guy in close proximity time-wise, and have it also be a woman who chose not to reveal to Picard or her son the father of that child. Then Bok had to get a sample of Picard's DNA, then sneak in and resequence Jason's DNA without anyone knowing. How likely is any of this? []
  • Peter Marx has been a Ferengi on TNG three times. His prior appearances were as Nibor in "Ménage à Troi," and as Dr. Reyga in "Suspicions." He also played the Krenim Commandant on Voyager in "Year Of Hell" parts 1 & 2. []
  • The character of DaiMon Bok appeared first in episode 9 "The Battle". The character was played by a different actor in that episode. []
  • The script name for Jason was Cristof and was changed since Cristof is Patrick Stewart's real life son's name. []
  • Jason: If I'm not your son... is this person still going to want to kill me?
Picard: Once he's made aware of the fact, I expect he won't...
Jason: In that case you won't mind me saying that I hope you're not my father... []
  • Picard: (to his son with hair) One thing is clear - you'll never look at your hairline in the same way again. []
