Cicely Tyson hosts, and a Cryptic John Balushi Joke. hide show

This show is a prime example why the first 5 years of SNL are in a league of their own. A classic cast, and good humor. Its too bad a lot of the political jokes are before my time, and I don't get them, this show aired just 2 months and three days before I was born. One cryptic John Balushi joke about Heroine defenatly reuined the opening sequence for me, but I am sure on 2/10/79, it meant something different.

  • Cicely tried to work without cue cards for most of the week. She finally relented late Friday night, much to the dismay of cue card men who worked well into the night writing her parts down. []
  • Cicely also rubbed SNL the wrong way, refusing to do several parts and blasting the writers for their mistreatment of Garrett Morris. []
  • Gilda: Well, it seems like the writers just found out that, uh, Deng went back to China. You know, they’re all so busy they didn’t get a chance to watch the news or anything and, uh... now Deng isn’t even here anymore.
Jane: Well, he left five days ago.
Gilda: I know, and they just found out. []
