3. Folklore
First aired: 2/15/2003In Mac Anu, Subaru meets with Silver Knight to discuss what has been happening with Tsukasa in "The World". She tells him that they are not system moderators and that they are just players. Subaru then says that they will resume the conversation later, but first she must meet someone. In another area, BT asks Bear how it is possible for Tsukasa to move freely between the fields and have a guardian protect him. The only explanation Bear can think of is that Tsukasa has somehow risen above the system. BT then suggests that Bear should meet Tsukasa in real life, but Bear replies that if he can't log out here, he must be in pretty bad shape out there. BT suggests that Tsukasa might not be a normal player, but merely a character developed by CC Corp. In another field, Subaru meets with Sora and he wants to discuss the Key of the Twilight. Subaru says that does not exit and begins to leave. Sora then draws his weapon and forces her to stop. Eventually Subaru returns to the city followed by Sora. When Silver Knight questions why Sora is there, Subaru tells him that he will be with the Crimson Knights for a short time due to certain circumstances. Subaru then dismisses Sora and tells him that she has some issues the Crimson Knights need to attend to. When Silver Knight asks for an explanation, Subaru tells him that, "Something is about to happen, in this gaming world, in The World." She then says that Sora is part of that something. When Silver Knight asks if she believes him, she doesn't know but she wants to keep him close, just in case. Mimiru is in another main area when Bear appears. Mimiru tells him that she heard from Tsukasa, and that he would like to meet her again. Mimiru doesn't know if she should go in case Tsukasa's guardian tries to attack them again. So she asks if Bear will go in her place. After thinking back to their previous encounter with Tsukasa, Bear agrees. Bear appears at a church on a floating rock surrounded by mists. When he meets with Tsukasa, he is a little disappointed that Mimiru didn't come to see him. Tsukasa then proceeds to tell Bear that there are no more problems. Bear asks if he can log out now, but Tsukasa tells him no. Tsukasa proceeds to call his guardian and shows Bear that he can now control the guardian. Bear is confused and tells him that doesn't mean anything. Tsukasa then teleports away leaving Bear behind. In another field, BT, Sora, Subaru, Silver Knight, Mimiru and Bear are all together to discuss the recent events. Mimiru tells everyone that it might be possible that Tsukasa may be a victim in all of this. Silver Knight tells her she is wrong, but Bear agrees with Mimiru. Bear tells everyone how a cat-like character was able to control Tsukasa's guardian and stop it from attacking (in the last episode). Silver Knight tells everyone that was how all of this got started. Bear says that whatever they do they have to hurry. Since Subaru and Silver Knight don't believe that Tsukasa is a victim, Bear tells Subaru to check the access logs to see how long he has been playing. Bear then tells her to contact them if she finds out anything, In a desert area Tsukasa stands and his guardian stare off into the sunset as the show ends.

She tells him that if they log is correct that Tsukasa has been on for the last 10 days. Tsukasa is again alone with the little floating girl, and he asks what will happen when she awakens. Finally the voice speaks to him and tells him something wonderful will happen when she awakes. "You and I, and he, the three of us will be able to live on peacefully, undisturbed by anyone else. In a world devoid of any harm or discomfort." Tsukasa says that there are no worlds like that In the real world, a grown man stands in the rain and tries to light a cigarette, as the man walks down the rainy street, we can see a hospital in the background. In a forest area Bear sits alone waiting for Mimiru. When she appears, she tells him how horrible it was without him the other day. She then asks why they are meeting in the forest. Bear replies that they will be seen to easily in the filed. He then adds that he does not know what's going on anymore, and they should get to the dungeon. Standing in front of a statue, Bear mentions that Tsukasa is an interesting name. "Is it his handle? Real name? First name? Last name? Is it a guy or a girl?" He then says that he might have found Tsukasa, but he doesn’t know because it could be anyone. Bear walks up to a monster portal and a large crab-like monster appears. During the fight, Mimiru asks what he saw. Bear says that he saw a girl who was in a hospital bed due to an unknown reason, barley living thanks to the work of machines and medicines. Back in the city Subaru meets up with Silver Knight and she tells him that she asked the system administrators to restrict Tsukasa access rights. Silver Knight agrees with her decision. She tells him that is not the problem. The problem is that despite access being prohibited, Tsukasa is still in "The World". Mimiru and Bear arrive at the church in the middle of a field, Mimiru immediately notices that this field is different from all the others. Upon entering the church, they meet up with Tsukasa. Tsukasa once again summons his guardian for Mimiru and Bear to see. Mimiru says she wants to ask Tsukasa a question. Tsukasa tells her he cannot tell her where he got his guardian. Mimiru says she is curious about that, but asks him if he is a girl. Tsukasa tells her that he is a guy and asks why she wanted to know. They replied that there was no reason and soon Tsukasa warps out. Mimiru says he defiantly doesn't like us now, and Bear thinks he was not lying, and they are once again back where they started. Tsukasa is now sitting alone in another field, as many footsteps are heard running, and his guardian begins to wail. He tells it to behave. All of a sudden, four female warriors attack Tsukasa. One of them asks if he is the sorcerer from the message boards, and if he is, he will fight him regardless. Tsukasa asks if they are sure, because he will not hold back against idiots like them. He then proceeds to summon his guardian. The guardian starts attacking the females, and they find out quickly they can't win a fight against it, Tsukasa says that is enough but he guardian won’t listen and it continues to attack the women. In the city Subaru found out what Tsukasa is doing and Silver Knight says that if he is using the monster on other players then... Subaru tells him to be quiet, and that she would like to talk to him. She then gives an order to make Tsukasa wanted on all servers of "The World" by the name of the Scarlet Knights.

Back in the root town, Mimiru waits for Bear to arrive, when he does, she asks him why are there wanted posters out for Tsukasa’s arrest if this is a game. Bear explains that there are rules, and that Tsukasa broke them. In a field with dark clouds, BT waits for Sora to arrive. When he does, she tells him she wants to exchange some information with them. He replies by saying unless the information he receives is of equal value, then it is not a trade. She tells him that she has a plan to lure Tsukasa out of hiding. As Subaru and Silver Knight walk about the city, Sora appears and asks them if they have found a way to lure him out. Sora says that he has a plan and proceeds to ask if they are interested. She tells him no and walks past him. In the main area again Mimiru states how strange it was for BT to contact her. When BT arrives, she tells Mimiru that one of her friends saw another player with a monster that looks like Tsukasa’s. Mimiru proceeds to ask BT if that character can log out. BT does not know, but she is concerned. BT asks if Tsukasa would be interested in finding out this information. Mimiru is confused why BT would tell her the information but be unsure if Tsukasa would want to know. BT replies that he does not have his member address. BT then tells Mimiru that he can normally be found in the one field. In an alley, Sora informs Silver Knight that the information is supposed to reach Tsukasa. He then adds that Tsukasa thinks he is special because he has his monster, but if someone else has it, he is no longer special. In the field where the mysterious player with a monster like Tsukasa’s should be waiting, Bear and Mimiru appear. Silver Knight and Sora are waiting atop a castle in the same area, waiting for Tsukasa to arrive. While they are waiting, another member of the Crimson Knights tells them that they are all in position. Sora leaves Silver Knight and joins BT atop a castle. Sora tells her that once they capture Tsukasa, they will take him to another field and where they have a barrier set up there. BT adds that once Tsukasa is separated from the monster, he will be powerless. Mimiru and Bear are exploring the field when she points out that there is not a heavy swordsman with a monster anywhere. Bear suggests that maybe the swordsman did not exist in the first place and he tells Mimiru to send a message to stop Tsukasa. Tsukasa did not understand Mimiru’s message and teleports in anyways. Tsukasa stands alone in the middle of the field, Mimiru calls out to him, and then sees all the Scarlet Knights ready to attack. Bear yells out that it is a trap. Tsukasa summons his guardian while the Knights surround Tsukasa. Silver Knight tells him that they won't hold back. Bear yells to make them stop, but Silver Knight tells him that he will not call back an order he already made. Subaru then shows up and demands to know what is going on. Subaru and Tsukasa exchange glances and she adds that she didn’t authorize an operation like this and begins to walk toward Tsukasa. While she is talking, Tsukasa sees a bug fly by and says that it smells nice. Subaru is surprised he can smell inside a game. Tsukasa replies that he can also feel pain. Tsukasa asks Subaru if she thinks he is lying and she tells him no. She asks him what he intends to do now and that as long as he abides by the rules of the game, they have no reason to keep him there. Tsukasa tells her that if he is left alone he won’t do anything wrong. Mimiru appears in a field and calls out for Sora’s name. Sora appears and she accuses him on selling out Tsukasa to the Knights. When Sora says he didn’t, Mimiru doesn't believe him, and attacks him, but Sora jumps out of the way. Mimiru demands to know where Tsukasa is. Sora says that he knows where he is, but he must help him out first. Back outside where Tsukasa is being held, Sora appears and proceeds to kill Silver Knight, then the remaining Crimson Knights. He then makes his way into the chamber where Tsukasa is. When he gets inside he tells Subaru that he let himself in and demands Tsukasa. Subaru refuses to give him to Sora. Tsukasa stands up and proceeds to leave with Sora. As Sora and Tsukasa leave the dungeon Crim meets them at the exit. Sora proceeds to battle Crim, as Tsukasa leaves the dungeon. Upon leaving the dungeon, Mimiru grabs him and apologizes for scaring him and tells him to come with her. After a brief conversation with Mimiru, Tsukasa teleports out. Within a few moments after he leaves, Sora appears wondering where Tsukasa went. Mimiru tells him he just missed him, and that he won't get captured anymore. Back in Mac Anu, Subaru and Silver Knight are discussing how a monster that is similar in appearance to Tsukasa’s guardian has appeared almost simultaneously in three servers. Subaru mentions that this might have something to do with a much larger problem and Tsukasa may be the first victim. He calls BT, Crim, Subaru and Mimiru together to discuss what they should do. Meanwhile, Sora and BT are forming an alliance to find the Key first, apparently for selfish reasons. They enlist the help of Silver Knight, but only intend to use him as a pawn. They are probably after the forces that still follow him. Their plan is to take all the information BT will obtain from "Bear's Party", and then use it to try to get to the key first. Their logic is that they can move faster than Bear and co. Tsukasa returns to where the sleeping girl was. Suddenly he is picked up and held over the bed. He appears to be in pain. He asks if he is being punished for bringing Subaru, and a voice answers yes. He is raised over the bed, then a sort of explosion, then implosion occurs with Tsukasa as the epicenter. Then in a scene reminiscent of the intro, his clothes and chunks of his body seem to be torn away. When it is down, he is set down on the bed.

Mimiru says that they have all ready looked everywhere he could be. Subaru says they haven't looked where the sleeping girl (Aura) was. There is a brief flashback to when Tsukasa took Subaru there and Aura was missing. Mimiru says they need Tsukasa's power to get there. Subaru says she will use the message boards to try to find someone that knows something about the place. They all agree to search for Tsukasa. Subaru leaves to talk with B.T. , and Mimiru comments on how tired Subaru looks. Tsukasa is shown leaning against the bed. He is in some sort of trance and sits absolutely still. B.T., Sora and Silver Knight are discussing what to do about the Key of the Twilight. Sora says that the others have no plan, and that it is up to Tsukasa. B.T. says he is missing and that even Subaru can't contact him. At mention of Subaru, Silver Knight expresses interest. B.T. says he is worried about her. Sora says he is jealous, but Knight says that because Subaru has gotten involved with "an illegal player" she has lost her way and is playing outside the rules and that has him worried. B.T. says that is jealousy. Sora tells him to relax because Tsukasa is a girl. Knight is surprised. B.T. tells that they don't have definitive proof though. Knight asks if Subaru knows, and B.T. tells him probably not. She then goes to meet with Subaru. Then Sora starts to leave. When Knight asks where to, he says to investigate a rumor. B.T. and Subaru meet up. B.T. asks if Subaru has found anything, and she says no. Subaru asks B.T. the same with the same results. B.T. asks what the big deal is since it's only a game. Subaru says Tsukasa is the only thing she likes about the world anymore. B.T. almost tells her that Tsukasa is a girl in real life, but stops. Subaru leaves, and B.T. realizes that, to Subaru, it is more than a game. Then it goes to Crim fighting an infected, unbeatable monster (data bug). Tsukasa is shown again, this time he his rubbing his hands in the grass. Macha appears and looks at him with a concerned face. Then Crim and Bear are discussing what to do about the Key of the Twilight. Bear says he is worried about Subaru, but Crim tells him she'll be okay. They then discuss the new invincible data bugs. Now Sora and Silver Knight are walking through a field at night. Sora tells knight he is going to investigate the rumor of the data bugs. Now it is back to Tsukasa, who picks up a twig, and hands it to a very worried Macha. Tsukasa doesn't appear any better. It goes back to Crim and Bear as they agree to investigate the invincible monster. Crim also tells Bear to tell Subaru that if she gets in trouble, she can use the "spell". (See episode "Recollection") Then Sora meets a party in a field. He cuts down two members, then tells the third to tell him about the data bug. Mimiru, Bear and Subaru meet in the church. Bear gives Crim's message, then says they must visit the broken man again. There is brief flashback to their first encounter with him. He says the man looks just like Harold Horwick, creator of "The World" prototype, "Fragment". Bear says he holds the solution. Mimiru asks how they can get there again since it fell apart the last time they went. Bear said there must be a copy of him on each server. They wonder where to find the man again, and Bear says Helba could help. Bear says they will contact her through the message boards. Then it shows Aura hanging upside-down under a swirling portal (not gate). Macha looks on and appears frightened. Then the voice asks her what is it, and says that there is nothing to worry about, that only Macha, the girl and she are there. Macha asks about Tsukasa, and the voice tells him to forget about him because they don't need him anymore. Macha is scared, and the voice says that a whole new world will come, where the three of them (Macha, Voice Girl) can live together peacefully. (Macha is right to be frightened, since the voice made the same promise to Tsukasa, and look what happened to him. Tsukasa, whose status is unchanged is flicking an eye of the stuffed bear near the bed where Aura was with his thumb. The eye comes off come off, and he begins flicking the other one. 26. Intermezzo
First aired: 3/16/2004 Production Code: DVD-01-26This episode is a long flashback that tells the tale of Mimiru's mentor, an amazingly powerful character controled by 3 high school girls with the intention of working together to create a extremely powerful character before their graduation, and they pretty much suceed. The novice forms of Mimiru and Bear barely survive in an overpowering dungeon until she comes along, taking out the opposition in a single blow. Mimiru accompanies this Gardenia look-a-like to the bottom floor of the dungeon where they are faced by a supposedly invincible enemy, so to protect Mimiru, she uses a skill that crystallises her character but guarantees the enemies death. Mimiru goes to the bottom level of this dungeon with Bear once again to find her mentors form, still preserved perfectly, standing in the exact same position as when she used her fatal skill. This episode is a must-see in my opinon, despite not actually being involved with the true plot, as it explains Mimiru's motive and reason for playing the world.

Helba has prepared a special hot springs for the .hack characters so they could get some rest and relaxation. Kite, Elk, Tsukasa, Mimiru and many other characters from the series make an appearence in The World for this reward. There is only one small catch, Helba will not reveal the exact location of where the springs are located. It soon becomes a race between the cast of .hack//SIGN and the characters from the game to see who can find it first. However, this is a catch, while everyone is trying to find the springs, someone is going around killing the other charcaters. Who will make it to the springs first and who is behind the deaths of many of the other characters? This one-of-a-kind episode was comically draw using triangles to signify that it has absolutely no value in the series or storyline and was created purely to make you laugh... and it does!
