8.4 GreatThe Summerholt Institute is behind a conspiracy using binary text to alter a reader's brain functions, turning them into violent psychopaths. Lana nearly kills Chloe as a result of the "Brainwave" effect. hide show
At the DP, Chloe is clearing out her tiny work area, preparing to leave after Lionel killed her column-writing job. She offers editor Max Taylor a few stories on a 3 1/2 inch floppy (dating this episode), but he declines, until Chloe changes the author's name to her cousin Lois Lane - is this the first mention of Lois as her cousin in a Smallville episode?
At Luthorcorp, Lex visits the IT department, and talks to tech Molly (up-and-coming actress MIssy Peregrym), who helps Lex with a computer problem, but after he leaves we see she's actually stealing a hard drive that's marked as Smallville High property. At the Torch, Chloe finds that the computers, with all her files, have been retrieved by donor Luthorcorp. As she leaves, Chloe is nearly run over by a red Dodge pickup, aggressively driven by Clark! How many times has that old truck had body work? Clark can't explain his actions, or fill in Sheriff Adams about what happened, and Chloe isn't sure either. Chloe and Clark try to figure out what happened - Clark was reading an email just before he blanked out.
Lex learns that Molly apparently was a fraud who wiped out several hard drives. Molly then sends a toxic email to Lana from "Brainwave." As she reads it, binary text suddenly alters her brain functions, sending her into a murderous rage against Chloe. Down the stairs they fight in one of the most violent and effective fight scenes ever produced by the film crew. Alternating cuts of Chloe and Lana with a terrific stunt crew, the director and film editors did a masterful job on this shocking sequence, with Lana finally subdued by Chloe and Adam. Afterwards, Lana remembers nothing, but Adam helps identify the email sender - it was from Chloe's computer, now under Luthercorp control.
Summerholt Neurological Institute head Dr. Garner visits Molly, feeding her information about reporters in general and Max Taylor specifically, hinting that they are destroying the Institute's work. Clark learns that the hard drive from Chloe's old compuer is missing from Luthorcorp and that Molly may have been the thief. Chloe had interviewed megalobrainiac Molly earlier about Summerholt, where she had been a patient. Garner knew about Chloe's explosive investigation, but other Summerholt forces are active, and one murders editor Max while Chloe tries to warn him. Since Chloe is now in grave danger, Lex agrees to house her, while Clark goes to meet Summerholt honcho Dr. Garner. Clark accuses him of sending pathological emails, and is able to overhear Garner's call to Molly, getting her location.
On a side plot, Adam is set to move back to Metropolis, but Lana asks him to stay, offering him the upstairs room at the Talon. Lex arrives at Molly's apartment, and we see that she is a prodigious intellect - then Clark arrives to hear her defend Garner and how the Institute helped her. Clark and Lex find she has just sent a lethal email to Martha Kent, and when Chloe is called to the Kent's, Jonathan and Martha attack her. Clark arrives, Jonathan pulls out kryptonite, and beats up on Clark, until Chloe rescues him. Rough time for Chloe! Clark and Chloe begin to mend their relationship, as she agrees to stop investigating him.
In the epilog, Lex, driving his silver Porsche 911, meets Garner, revealing that Molly is getting the help she needs - shouldn't that be prosecution for murder? Lex never met a mad scientist he didn't like, so he enlists Garner in restoring his seven weeks of erased memory. It's blackmail, but that's what Lex does best. Re-run rating B-. -

I think this is my favorite episode of Smallville, all thanks to that memorable fight between Chloe and Lana, one of the best fights, might I add, that I've seen on Smallville, they started upstairs, came downstairs, into the girl's locker room, there were axes involved, completely brilliant. From the moment Lana's eyes turned green to the moment they were icing their heads with peas, I was out of my seat cheering them on, I for one have been waiting for Chloe and Lana to throw down for quite a while but haven't we all, it doesn't get any better than that.

Of the younger characters on Smallville, Chloe has always stood out as the most interesting, and enjoyable to watch. Allison Mack was clearly made for the role and she gives continually brillant performances. Chloe centric episodes have always appealed to me, as you can tell, she is my favourite character. The plot, is basically that some crazy chick played by Andi from Reaper, is trying to kill Chloe for an article that she has written about Summerhalt, the institute that had been experimenting on Ryan in season two. Andi (or Molly as she is known in Smallville), is sending messages to the people closest to Chloe to try and get them to kill her.
This provides some wonderful action sequences, with Clark trying to run down Chloe while she 'eats pavement', Lana and Chloe have an awesome catfight, and Ma and Pa try to attack her in the barn. Fun all around.
The last scene is rather good too, Lex wants the seven weeks of his life back he lost through electroshock therapy in Asylum (Michael Rosenbaum gives brilliant performances in Shattered and Asylum, by the way).
Smallville season three has been consistently good so far, quite odd to say that after the suckfests that were seasons one and two. This episode manages to stand above the rest, and any episode with a lot of Chloe is automatically awesome anyway! -

This one was heaps of fun! It's always good to see Smallville let off a little steam and mix it up every now and then. I've said it before and I'll say it again, while this season hasn't been exceptional, it has been consistently inventive with its storylines but not exactly consistently great. This, however, is - from the pre-title sequence with Clark attempting to the mow down Chloe, to the elaborate fight sequence between Lana and Miss Sullivan, everything is played with a knowing wink. Elsewhere, Adam still remains a mystery at this point and it's good that he's sticking around, it gives Kreuk a fresh face to bounce off of and it's making Lana a bit bubblier, too. My personal highlight has to be Martha Kent, of all people, wielding a scythe, of all weapons, attempting to gut Chloe like a fish. Always fun.

Lex: Look, I hate to think you wasted a trip to Metropolis, but I seriously doubt my father's trying to kill Chloe.
Clark: Why? He was willing to put his own son in a mental institution. You know what he's capable of. [edit] -
Adam: Remind me again what your school mascot is. (a young man walks by wearing a Crows jacket) Oh, wait, it's a bird.
Lana: Okay, it's a small town. We take our school spirit very seriously. [edit] - Lana: Clark will always be a very important part of my life. But whatever there was between us is gone. [edit]

Pete: Yeah well, I guess the Grinch changed his mind.
Pete is referring to one of Dr. Seuss's characters in his books but after Seuss's death, a 2000 live-action feature film adaptation was produced. Directed by Ron Howard, it featured Jim Carrey in the titular role. The Grinch is an unpleasant grouch and is always out to ruin or sabotage something and he has even stolen Christmas. [edit] -
Adam: I don't know. I guess I've watched a few too many Jackie Chan movies.
Jackie Chan is a popular martial artist and actor who performs his own stunts. He is recognized worldwide for his acrobatic fighting style, comic timing, and use of any near-by objects as improvised weaponry. [edit] -
Adam: I think Norman Bates would be right at home here.
Adam is of course referring to the classic thriller "Psycho" (1960), a film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and based on a novel by Robert Bloch which was about a very mentally distrubed man (Anthony Perkins) who was seemingly dominated by his mother to the point where he disguised himself as his own mother. It spawned a series of sequels, and was later remade in 1998 with Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates. [edit]
