The production decided to split them after they realized that someone had to die in the CTU explosion later on. Reiko also stated that she had originally auditioned for the role of Nina Myers, as well as that of Kate Warner, before landing her role as Michelle Dessler.

Mason: That was great, Almeida. Now what?
Tony: Back off, George. I did the best I could.
Mason: I guess your best isn't very good then, is it? (edit) Palmer: What do you want to do tonight?
Keith: I don't know, get a movie?
Palmer: You came out all this way to watch a video? (edit) Palmer: If a bomb goes off today it will hurt us, but it will destroy you. (edit) Tony: We can get to Kim. We can get her out of the city. We can keep her safe. I promise you. The best thing you can do for her is help find that bomb.
Jack: I trusted everybody here at CTU to protect my wife, and I lost her. Tony, I'm not gonna lose my daughter. I'm sorry (edit) Mason: Jack, look at you. You look like a bum off the street, you're not talking to me, I just confiscated a witness outside of my authority, based on your call. Are you going to tell me what you are doing?
Jack: (flatly) No. (edit)
