7:02 AM - 7:07 AM
Jack stands over the body of Ryan Chappelle, looking distraught. The van pulls up and four men wearing masks get out, all holding guns on Jack. Jack grips his own gun as one man scans Chappelle's body for a tracker. Then the men toss his corpse in the van. One man reminds Jack that if he tries to follow them, they will release the virus. The van drives off and Jack calls Wayne Palmer to report Chappelle's murder.
Wayne tells Palmer that Chappelle has been killed. Palmer becomes angry and says he refuses to give in to any more of Saunders' demands. Wayne reminds him of the obvious, that Saunders still has the virus. Palmer tells Wayne to convene his cabinet.
At CTU, the techs tell Tony that they have finished following the money trail that Chappelle was working on. They discovered that Saunders has been transferring money each month to his daughter, Jane Saunders, who goes to college in Santa Barbara. Kim pulls up an image of Jane on her screen and Tony tells Adam to have the Santa Barbara police stand by to pick her up. Jack calls Tony and informs him that Chappelle is dead. Tony tells Jack about Jane Saunders and Jack says they shouldn't pick her up yet. Saunders will have one of his operatives watching her, so they'll have to switch her out with an agent who resembles her. Tony tells Chloe to pull up all photos of agents who look like Jane. Then Tony calls Michelle at the Chandler Plaza to ask about her results, but she says they had to be taken off sight for analysis and won't be ready for another hour. A virus-ravaged corpse is wheeled past Michelle as she hangs up and she grimaces.
7:08 AM - 7:11 AM
At CTU, Tony tells Adam to send Michelle some of her work. Adam says that they've contacted Bill's wife, but haven't found Bill yet. They are sending Chase to track him down.
As Jack flies back to CTU, Palmer calls him and worries about continuing to give into Saunders. Jack tells Palmer that Saunders is in a vengeful state of mind, blaming the U.S. for his imprisonment in Kosovo. Jack has no doubt that Saunders will release more of the virus if Palmer doesn't keep giving into him.
At CTU, Chloe brings Tony a list of the agents who most resemble Jane Saunders. The closest match lives in San Francisco, which is too far away. The next available match…is right downstairs, tapping on a computer keyboard. Tony calls Kim upstairs and kicks Chloe out. Tony tells Kim what they want her to do and Kim agrees. After all, she needs a break from the office and there are no cougars in Santa Barbara.
7:16 AM - 7:22 AM
Kim comes downstairs and Chloe tells her that fieldwork isn't learn-as-you-go. Kim orders her back to work since Chloe will be coordinating the mission. Oops! Maybe Kim would be safer with the cougar after all. Kim walks off, just as Chloe says how much she likes Kim's energy. Chloe tells Adam to send her the info she'll need to prepare for the mission.
Meanwhile, Chase questions Bill's wife as to his whereabouts. He finally tells her that Bill picked up an infection while at the Chandler Plaza Hotel. Bill's wife figures out that he was cheating on her, again, and starts to flip out. A medic comes out of the bathroom holding a tissue with fresh blood. Chase orders his men to contact every ER within a 30-mile radius.
Bill is at a pharmacy and asks the druggist what he can take for an hour-long nosebleed as he holds a handkerchief to his face. The pharmacist tells him to go visit an ER. He bumps into a woman as he leaves.
At CTU, Tony is briefing Kim on her assignment when Jack gets back. He asks Chloe where Tony is and Chloe all but gives the whole thing up. Tony sees Jack headed for the conference room and goes out to meet him. Jack asks what's going on and Tony explains about Kim's undercover mission. Jack is naturally unhappy about this and a shoving match ensues between himself and Tony. Tony yells that Kim works for her, but Jack points a finger at him and says, "don't!" Jack charges past Tony into the conference room and puts Kim against a wall. He roars that the reason he got her this job is so he could keep her safe. Kim doesn't back down and says its her job and her duty to do it.
7:26 AM - 7:33 AM
Jack and Kim emerge on to the roof and head for the chopper. Kim has changed clothes and Jack tells her that they will fix her hair and make-up when they arrive in Santa Barbara. Jack tells her that her disguise won't fool anyone at close range, so they'll put her where Saunders' men are only at a distance. Jack then gives her a gun and tells her not to hesitate to use it if she has to. They board the chopper and it lifts off.
Palmer meets with his cabinet, including a still-employed Vice-President Jim Prescott. He tells them about Saunders, the virus at the hotel and the list of demands that Saunders has made. The cabinet is shocked to learn that Palmer authorized Chappelle's execution. Palmer tells all of them to cooperate with CTU as they continue their search for the virus.
Back at CTU, Chloe asks Tony when Chappelle will be back. Tony calls for everyone's attention and tells them that Chappelle was killed in the line of duty 30 minutes ago. Tony will be assuming his role for the duration of the crisis. Just then, Chase calls in and tells Tony about Bill being infected. Bill's wife is wheeled out inside a quarantine bubble as Tony tells Chase about Kim's assignment. Chase is none too happy, but Tony already exhausted himself with Jack and just orders Chase to keep looking for Bill.
In the chopper, Jack apologizes to Kim for roughing her up. He reminds her that in the field, he is in command and she must do exactly as he tells her. Kim agrees, signaling a historic moment in the 24 universe.
Bill is at an urgent care center when he notices a news bulletin playing on the TV talking about the outbreak at the hotel where he did the nasty three hours ago. He stares at his blood-soaked handkerchief and then runs to the nurse's station, demanding immediate attention. The nurse realizes who Bill is and grabs a doctor, who orders Bill to be isolated immediately.
7:37 AM - 7:40 AM
One of Saunders' henchmen calls him to report that he has confirmed the identity of Chappelle's body through fingerprints. Saunders tells him to dump the body and hangs up. He tells his assistant that CTU might still have a lead on his daughter, so they should be sure to watch her closely. The henchman calls a man who is watching Jane Saunders and the man reports that she is just leaving for work as he follows her. Henchman warns the follower to be careful.
Palmer is still meeting with his cabinet, who are all worried about the implications of Palmer ordering Chappelle's death. Palmer argues that he did it for the good of the country when the phone that Saunders delivered begins to ring. Palmer tells them that its Saunders and steps outside to take the call. Saunders tells Palmer that they confirmed that it was Chappelle's body and promises that the corpse will be disposed of, respectfully. Its nice to know that even British terrorists are polite about it. Palmer asks Saunders what he wants. Saunders says that he wants to make America clean again since most of the world now hates the U.S. He means to make them dismantle their military machine, forcing them to retreat back within their borders. Saunders demands that Palmer give him the names of all covert foreign nationals working in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, delivered to a website called, www.sylviaimports.com, within the next 45 minutes. Palmer argues that those people are citizens of their own countries, but Saunders knows they are spies working for the U.S. Saunders again threatens to release the virus if Palmer doesn't comply and hangs up.
7:41 AM - 7:43 AM
Jack and Kim land in Santa Barbara and Agent Forrester tells them that they have set up a staging area near the campus library where Jane works. They all hurry into a van and speed off.
Chase orders his men to tell all of Bill's neighbors to stay inside and then calls Tony, who tells him that Bill has been found at an ER. Chase asks if Kim is in play yet but Tony says no as Chase drives away.
In Santa Barbara, Kim is putting on her wig as Agent Forrester explains that Jane Saunders works behind a desk and that CTU has tapped into the library security cameras so they can monitor. Jack says that Saunders probably has a man watching his daughter. He examines Kim's disguise and tells her to be sure to keep her head down and stay at least 10 feet behind the desk at all times.
7:48 AM - 7:52 AM
Tony, Chloe and Adam monitor Chase as he questions Bill in an isolation room at the ER. Chase asks Bill for the names of everyone he came in contact with. Bill is too stunned to think straight.
Jane Saunders walks into the bathroom and is chloroformed by a CTU Agent. Kim steps out of a stall and begins to change. Jack observes from an AV trailer outside. Finally, Kim emerges from the bathroom and keeps her face turned away as she walks past a suspicious man in a red shirt. Jack warns her to avoid him. Kim sits behind the desk at Jane's computer.
Tony brings everyone up to date on Chase's questioning of Bill using photos on a Power Point. Tony explains that Bill came in contact with a pharmacist and one person who's name and address is known, but two other people were in the pharmacy and are unknown. Tony also says that six people left the ER before the quarantine was put into place. Adam figures that up to 75 people may have been infected by now. If any of them are in a highly populated area, they're all screwed. Tony orders a quarantine of two neighborhoods and then stares at a photo on the screen.
7:53 AM - 8:00 AM
Jack goes into a room where Jane is tied to a chair. He dismisses the two agents there and closes the door. He takes a capsule from a metal case and holds it under her nose, causing her to wake up. Jack tells her that he wants her help in finding her father. Jane demands a lawyer. "There's no lawyer. There's just you and me," Jack growls. Jane tells Jack that her father only visits her twice a year and that he always contacts her. Jack thinks she's lying and menaces her, telling her that she has no idea how far he'll go to acquire her cooperation. Just then, Agent Forrester calls in and says that the man in the red shirt is moving toward Kim.
Redshirt is at the desk, asking Kim for help in finding a book. Kim ignores him and keeps typing as another librarian comes to help, but Redshirt continues to stare at Kim. Jack orders her to get up and angle away into the stacks. She does so, staying in view of the camera. Then the camera pans away from Kim and Jack, naturally, is unhappy, demanding that they get her back on screen. Kim runs into a guy who wants help finding something down an aisle. She moves a few feet in and he pulls a gun on her and tells her he'll kill her if she screams. He demands to know who has Jane Saunders.
Jack sees that Kim is gone from the screen and won't answer her radio. He dashes from the AV trailer and runs across campus. Saunders' henchman comes out of the library with Kim, but she moves quickly to disarm him. They begin to struggle as Jack runs toward them. Kim shoots the henchman as Jack runs up to her. "Saunders will know we have his daughter," Kim says breathlessly. Tick, tick, tick...
