I gotta be quick, because it's after me. hide show

This episode has gotta be one of the most memorable for me. When the episode opens, Kolchak is riding an electric cart down numerous tunnels. When he finally starts talking he says, "It's after me." This got me interested. This story begins by showing the death of some underground workers at an archive institute. We are able to see some kind of creature doing the attacking. Maybe poor ideas and costumes were reasons for the show's early end. Kolchak gets into the place and discovers the creature's existence. Also, there are soldiers who claim to be from the water department, but who are most likely to be from some covert "special unit" of the US Army. Kolchak must battle a police/government cover-up to find out why this lizard-creature is attacking. The "Kolchak" series finale let our hero go out with one final battle. Hopefully, Kolchak will continue his crusade to stop the forces of darkness and, finally, win a Pulitzer in the process.

  • When Dr. Beckwith is discussing the teethmarks in the autopsy, there are plumes of smoke wafting up from below him - cigarette smoke, apparently, or possibly a burning electrical cable. Either way, it shouldn't be there. []
  • This is one of only two episodes that Jack Grinnage doesn't appear in. []
  • This is the only episode that begins in the middle of the action. Instead of the usual postscript dialogue into the tape recorder, we start with Kolchak in a golf cart racing away from the pursuing monster. []
  • Lt. Lamont gives Kolchak's yellow Mustang a nickname - "The Yellow Submarine". []
More Notes
  • Kolchak: You know, if all the film that I've shot that's been confiscated by the cops were laid end to end, I'd have enough film to shoot War and Peace. Including a travelogue and a cartoon. []
  • Kolchak: (closing narration)I know what's gonna happen now. As far as the authorities are concerned, the events of April twentieth and twenty-first will never have occurred. They-They're gonna tell me that if I ever breathe a word of this, they're gonna break me like a straw man. Now what about the sentry? Will its eggs hatch in the warm, dark dank dampness of its nesting place? Who knows? Maybe the government will find the nest, maybe they won't. We'll probably never know. But if you're in the subway or in a pedestrian tunnel underneath a ballpark and you think you hear something moving in the walls, it may not be your imagination. Take my advice, don't walk, run to the nearest exit. []
  • Kolchak: (opening narration) This is one story I may not get to file in person, so I'll have to talk fast - because it's after me. Claustrophobia has long been a part of the human experience from the Cro-Magnon all the way up to Freud. So if you ever happen to find yourself underground, and I mean deep underground, don't linger in the shadows. []
