This original musical, with songs by Stephen Sondheim, is a story about a poet, Charles Snell, who decides to drop out of society and live, secretly, in a department store. To his surprise he finds a group of people already doing just that. The catch is that once inside you must stay forever. Errant group members disappear only to reappear later as store mannequins. He meets a young lady, Ella Harkins, and the two fall in love and prepare to leave. The show ends with a shot of a new bride and groom mannequin in a store window.

The show was taped on location at Stern Bros. Department Store in Manhattan.

The story was done on the CBS radio show "Escape" three times: 11/05/47 with Elliot Lewis, 09/12/48 with William Conrad and 08/25/49 with Harry Bartell. Each production used the same script but different casts.

This episode only survives in a black and white copy. A soundtrack recording is due to released in May 2008 on the Kritzerland label in a edition limited to 3,000 copies. A studio cast version was released in 2001 on Nonesuch Records.
