    Welcome to Ask the Mods

Forum Moderators: AngelandSpike, danbambridge, Edward_Nigma, GeorgeFergus, Gislef, Grailwolf, more_ncis_now, Studog2961 and VillaFan.

Questions asked in Ask the Mods are eligible for reply by TV.com staff member or moderator.

Ask the Mods is the place to address any specific and non-rhetorical forum moderation questions you may have to TV.com's Forum Moderators: if you need clarification about the Community Terms of Service, what is legal or illegal in a post or a signature, how forum moderation works, why a post was deleted or locked, etc. Questions should be specific and relate to forum moderation issues. General policy concerns and protests should be PM'd to a staff member like danmod or jaxiecracks.

1.) Only Moderators are allowed to reply to topics within Ask the Mods unless marked by a moderator as "Open Discussion".

Remember, people who come here expect to hear it straight from the horse's mouth. Even if you absolutely, without-a-doubt know the answer, its still best to let us handle it as to avoid someone potentially getting wrong information. One of us will answer your question, and then the thread will be locked. Please try to give each new thread a title that is descriptive, rather than something vague like "question about a post".

2.) We will not bring up your personal record.

We will not discuss a specific post unless you ask about it. We will not bring up your moderation history in general unless you bring it up. You are free at any time to continue a discussion with one of us by using the message system, so that it will remain private. However, at no time will we discuss anyone else's moderation history with you.

3.) Please do not report specific violations in this forum.

This is not the place to report specific items that are in violation of the Terms of Service. This should generally be done using the report tool that is integrated into every message, on the right hand side pull-down menu.

4.) Please post a single specific question.

This isn't a discussion forum, but a place to answer one single specific question per post. Please make your question as clear and concise as possible. Once your question is answered, we will lock the thread. For more extended discussion, you should PM a moderator or staff member directly. If it's a topic that requires general discussion, please post in one of the general forums.

5.) Do not dodge a Suspension or Ban to inquire about it here.

Even if you're not sure about why you were suspended or banned, you will need to wait it out or contact staff at support@TV.com. It is NOT acceptable to attempt to circumvent the ban or suspension to inquire about it here. When we find out about it, not only will the new account be banned, but potentially ALL associated accounts, and possibly your IP address.

6.) Wait at least 24 hours before bumping your thread.

We will not purposely ignore your question, but sometimes we need to confer or double-check before posting a reply. Please allow us at least 24 hours to answer your question before you bump your thread, and only do so once. If your thread still goes unanswered after another day has passed, please PM a moderator and direct his or her attention to the problem. Your patience is appreciated.

    7.) Be respectful.

No matter how upset or frustrated you may be with another user, the website, or the moderators on the forum everyone in this forum is expected to treat each other with respect. Just like the rest of the forums. If you are very upset we suggest you take some time before posting an inquiry as a friendly and open minded inquiry always accomplishes more here than an angry rant.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Q: How can I become a moderator?
A: To be a forum moderator, you must show good forum behavior, follow the forum rules, and be otherwise helpful. It is not a good idea to advertise and "lobby" to be a moderator, but instead to just act how you would if you already were one. You can send a PM to Danmod and ask him to consider you, but don't expect a reply since hundreds of people PM him about being a moderator. Moderators are not picked often, perhaps once or twice a year, and you can be a mod if you have been moderated in the past, although it doesn't help you.

Q: I have been moderated several times and I think a moderator is out to get me! What do I do?

A: This question comes up from time to time and most of the time it is just a misunderstanding. 99% of the time someone says this we find that the moderator in question has never moderated that user and has no idea who they are However, if you feel you have been unfairly treated by a moderator with a personal agenda or feel a moderator is behaving inappropriately we ask that rather than posting in this forum you contact Support@TV.com.

Q: I was moderated for something I quoted. I didn't actually post it. Someone else posted it and I quoted it when replying. That doesn't seem fair.
A: Users are responsible for the content of their posts. That includes what they post by quoting another user who posts something inappropriate. Posting something doesn't become "ok" just because someone else posted it first and a user is now quoting it. If you see someone violating the TOS please do not quote their post.

Q: I'm a new user and have many questions about how to do things and how the forums work. Where do I go?
A: The Ask The Mods forum exists primarily to address moderation issues. New users, or users with questions about how the forums work (such as How do I change my avatar? or How do I raise my level) should checkout the Welcome New Users forum for answers to non moderation related questions.

Q: Why do you close threads when you respond to them?
A: Threads are typically locked once the question within is answered. This is done to help keep the board more organized and allow us to at-a-glance see what threads still need attention. For 90% of the threads that are handled here, no reply on your part is necessary, which is another reason why the lock is used. But, we realize there are certain times where you will want to follow-up, and we encourage you to privately message the responding moderator instead of creating another thread about it.

Q: I told a user that I reported them for a TOS violation but then I was moderated. Why?
A: We consider one user telling another user that they were reported trolling. Stopping to tell a user that they were reported often is done just to tease or annoy. We ask that users who report someone to simply move on and enjoy the forums after placing a report.

Q: I reported a post but it still has not been deleted.
A: After a report is placed it is placed in a queue. The volunteer moderators and administrators go through that queue from time to time and deal with each report. Depending on the number of moderators around and the number of reports it can take the moderators a while before they get to each report. We appreciate your patience.

    Q: I contacted Support@TV.com but I did not receive a response.
A: The folks at Customer Service receive numerous requests. Please give them a few business days before contacting them again.

Q: I received a PM that I was moderated, but there is nothing about that in my moderation history.
A: Sometimes it takes a little while for moderation to show up in a user's moderation history. If you were moderated the moderation should show up in your history within a few hours.

Q: I'm back at Level 1. What happened?
A: Sometimes there are technical issues with the leveling system. This is not a moderation related issue. Do not post in Ask the Mods about this. Moderators cannot help you with technical issues. Wait a day or two and your level will likely go back to normal. Go to the technical support forum if it does not.

Q: My suspension was for X days but it has gone on longer!
A: Suspensions don't begin counting down until midnight Pacific Time and are lifted at Midnight Pacific Time. So if you were suspended for one day at 3:00 pm on Tuesday the 1st you would not be able to post as soon as you were suspended. However, the clock on your suspension doesn't begin counting until the following midnight so you wouldn't be released from suspension until 12:01 am Pacific Time on Wednesday 3rd. If your suspension goes on longer than you think it should then Contact Support@TV.com as they can lift suspensions (moderators can not).
