Ed Clemons is known for being the town's once upon a time great quarterback. He thought he put all that behind him and started a family. Ed works insurance now. But situations develop which bring Ed back to coaching at his alma mater.

Ed tries to get the team in line, the one year deadline ever-present in his thoughts. He is distraught to discover there are problems with grades which might prevent some of the players from even setting foot on the field come game day.

Ed continues in his efforts to bring a winning season home for the Mustangs. His attentions are divided when he discovers that a man known for his success with women begins hanging around Maggie under the pretense of discussing insurance business.

Ed isn't the only one with romance worries as Joe Willie tries to juggle the females he now seems to have opportunities with given his newfound popularity as quarterback.

Joe Willie and his teammates head out on a college recruiting trip. They visit Joe Willie's sister, Jill, who attends the college. Joe Willie discovers that perhaps he isn't as mature and ready to be grown as he thought when trouble arises that his sister has to help him with.

Back home Ed discovers his assistant coach is more than meets the eye when he finds Abel writes more than football plays.

Even though Ed has been given a year to turn the team around he finds that some members of the community aren't willing to wait that long. Some school-board members devise a way to have Ed replaced if the team doesn't win the big game coming up.

To be the coach Ed has to be a teacher at the school. But Ed is missing credits required for a teaching certification. He goes back to school himself and realizes his coaching position may come to an end when his professor is a man who is not fond of jocks.
