A series of scandals in the village of St. Mary Mead seem to all revolve around Colonel Protheroe, and he is then found shot through the head at the vicarage. A young painter, Lawrence Redding, confesses to the crime, but then his lover also confesses. It is up to Miss Marple to unravel the mystery, and there is no shortage of people with a motive.

Murders
Colonel Lucius Protheroe - Shot through the head (edit) Rachael Stirling (Griselda Clement) is Diana Riggs' daughter. (edit) Stephen Churchett, the writer for the episode, has a cameo as a coroner. He played a coroner again in The Moving Finger. (edit) This episode was aired from April 17th-24th 2005 in the US on PBS in two parts. (edit) This episode is based on the novel by Agatha Christie of the same name, first published in 1930. (edit)

Griselda Clement: I'd stab him.

Miss Jane Marple: [still walking away] I prefer the chocolates.

In this episode, Miss Marple can be seen reading a book called The Simple Art of Murder. Within the book, the author criticises writers including Agatha Christie for creating over-elaborate murder plots in their works of fiction.
