On the 27th of January 1965, Alan was born in Perthshire in Scotland. His father, Alex, was a forester at Atholl Estate. When Alan was one, the family (mother Mary, dad Alex, and older brother Tom) moved from Dunkeld to Fassfern on the West Coast of Scotland. When he was four, they moved to the East coast, near the town of Carnoustie.

Alan went to Monikie Primary School and Carnoustie High School. He achieved 8 'O' Grades and 4 Highers.

After briefly working at the publishers, DC Thomson, he went on to attend the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, where he graduated in 1985 with a BA in Dramatic Studies.
