Moonlighters form bloody campaign

Save-the-show initiative calls on fans of the vampire-centric CBS drama to donate blood.

It’s official: These save-the-show campaigns are getting a little out of hand. What worked with Jericho (at least temporarily) was a miracle--fans sent in tons (literally) of nuts to CBS, and the execs reversed a decision to cancel the show.

Soon, other campaigns followed. Light bulbs and mini-footballs for Friday Night Lights. Mars bars for Veronica Mars. Hair clippings for Cavemen. Rice-a-Roni for Journeyman.

"Send your sweet, tasty blood to me, please. I'll make sure it gets to the Red Cross."

Now another campaign has begun asking fans of the show to literally give up a piece of themselves. The rabid fans of Moonlight, a CBS drama about a vampire who works as a private investigator, are asking for help to ensure a second season by donating what vampires love best--blood.

While bags and bags of blood being dumped on CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler's desk would probably be fairly effective, that won't be the case. The initiative is being spearheaded by fans in conjunction with the Red Cross, making it a worthy cause.

Details are up at activist site YouChoose.net, where so far more than 3,000 fans have vowed to pledge support, more than 260 have promised to donate blood, and a few dozen have committed to pledging funds to the Red Cross.

Moonlight star Alex O'Loughlin was so impressed with the campaign, he has offered his services to become a spokesperson for the Red Cross, says The Hollywood Reporter. An official announcement is expected next week.

Of course in Jericho's case, the show had already been canceled. Moonlight, on the other hand, is still on the air and could very well be back for a second season, bloodshed or no bloodshed.

Okayy my aunt got me into this show and i was instantly hooked. im so upset that it is cancelled. At this point im like in love with anything vampires, between the twilight series and then this show. Im only 15 but i still love this show, and the idea is great. and because im only 15 ive never heard of the other shows that they have cancelled but all i know is that this one shouldnt be added to that list.

I'm a big fan of Moonlight. I really enjoy shows about vampires and the occult, so I've watched them all - Buffy, Angel, Charmed, Dresden Files, Blood Ties and now, Moonlight. Recent series about vampires and the occult haven't faired very well; they've had one series then been cancelled. Perhaps after the success of Buffy and Angel the US viewers are a bit jaded, so they've stopped watching? Or, perhaps the shows aren't broadcast in a convenient time slot and therefore don't achieve the necessary ratings? Whatever the reason, I feel it's unfair to us viewers overseas who thoroughly enjoy these shows. We're at the mercy of the US viewing public and lose really popular shows (here) because of ratings. When did TV become all about ratings? When did we stop making great TV programmes in favour of making Celebrity Rehab?! CBS needs to start listening to its viewers or it might find that it doesn't have any for much longer.

I hate CBS!!! They canceled my Moonlight!!! What is it about the spot between Ghost Whisperer & Numb3rs!! Is it cursed? Every show that they have put there- they have canceled! And they were good...Threshold, Close to Home and now Moonlight! And the show that they have replaced it with? Please!! It sounds pathetically stupid!! I will not be watching it!! Bring Moonlight back!! It was one of the best shows on TV! My whole family tuned in to watch, including my parents who are almost 60!! It was a great show for everyone!! Please CW pick it up!!! Save Moonlight!!

I loved ANGEL when it was on, but MoonLight is so much better.
Plus didn't this show just win an award. I nearly fell off the couch when my Hubby told me the show was Cancelled....CBS .WHAT THE H*** is WRONG WITH YOU.
i have been a loyal fan to cbs, but i am now done...WE ARE GETTING VERIZON FIO'S SO WE HAVE TONS OF SHOWS TO WATCH. FIRST JERICHO NOW THIS..FORGET IT YOU PEOPLE AT CBS ARE NOT WORTH THE MONEY YOU MAKE. I COULD DO A MUCH BETTER JOB.

I AM SO SICK OF YOU TAKING OFF QUALITY TELEVISION, BUT MAKE SURE YOU PUT ON ALL THAT REALITY JUNK..
HOPE THIS COMES BACK TO BITE YOU IN THE BUTT

I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY CANCELED IT!!!! I HATE CBS! FIRST JERICHO NOW THIS! SCREW YOU!

This show really deserves a better timeslot. With all the hype about vampires right now (Twilight -series and blockbuster movie) this show could get quite a following (especially from a younger crowd). I think if they don't renew for a second season it is the fault only of the network and their lack of publicity for this show. Give this show a real shot - afterall it did win People Choice Award!!!!

awesome! lol

I love Moonlight. It the best show I have seen a Long time. It's full of suspense which I love it.
Posted 04/14/2008 11:57am
Moonlight sucks! Just die already!!! oh well, at least its helping a good cause.

Hi! I'm Maria from Portugal and I really enjoy Moonlight. It's a great show.
It would be so great to have another season. The more seasons the better.
I thing the campaign you are doing for the show to come bak is fabulous

Interesting that of all the Moonlight-related posts, this one brought out the haters as well as the lovers. Personally, I'd admit the 'guilty pleasure' factor is high for this one and is my most-anticipated show on my current list. If you don't agree, well, you know what to do (don't watch lol)! At any rate, I was pleased that a 'save the...' campaign is doing more than flood the producers with useless tchotchkes and is doing something prosocial for once. If you have that much antipathy for the show (like all those spinoff haters that probably watch every CSI version, or reality contest show , then donate anyway, NOT for the show. Heh, that'll show them.

"GO MOONLIGHT". I really enjoy this series and sure hope that CBS gives us a second season. Alex O'Loughlin does a great job of acting and his actions promised to the Red Cross are noteworthy. The show is one of those draw you right into the drama types. I also think that the blood donation was a great thought and action. Everyone that is able to donate blood should try to donate. You never know when your own family might need that resource. The Red Cross is a great society that is always in need.
Posted 04/07/2008 4:37pm
...didn't they try the same thing for "Blood Ties"? I hope it works better for Moonlight!!!
Posted 04/07/2008 2:19pm
Ugh. This blatant Forever Knight rip-off needs to die...
Posted 04/06/2008 4:42pm
This is a well-written show with lots of twists turns and and it deserves another season, at the very least.

I think that good shows need to be given a chance and better advertising of the show. We don't need more reality TV and good show concepts seem to be in short supply, lately.

You know, this was a great idea about three years ago when we used it to try to save Angel, except then, nobody was trying to take credit for our creative fan movement. I’m giving Moonlight a try, so this is not a dig on the show. It is more about the media and their inability to think back more than a year or two. It seems Jericho put the ā€˜save the show campaign’ on the map. However, no one seems to care about those who did it (some who won the battle) ā€œbefore it was all the cool new thingā€ Angel (Buffy season 7 episode Chosen). Many shows have come up with creative fan campaigns to save their shows (Roswell, Firefly, ANGEL and countless others) and I am sick of hearing about how Jericho and their nuts started it all. Why because they won a few more episodes? Or perhaps it is more about the fact that it was a major network show that has the press really paying attention. Who cares about the pathetic WB, CW, Fox, USA and Sci-fi networks, they just show crap anyway. The very first to do this (or so we believe, it may date back further) is Star Trek, and no internet paved the way for these special people. They actually used snail-mail. Crazy, huh?
Posted 04/05/2008 4:03pm
good idea. hey, if it works good for them. round of applause if it works. (even though i dont watch moonlight)
Posted 04/05/2008 10:10am
come on are u kidding me people love this show all over the world and just because it's not working over USA we love it in UK, you mite want to create a ratings programme over the internet which will show you how much people love this show all the best from UK zak medos
Posted 04/04/2008 10:42am
Great Show with loads of potential.. so hopefully this one will stick around.
Posted 04/04/2008 10:05am
Brilliant show. CBS would be mad to axe it.
Posted 04/04/2008 10:03am
Moonlight really deserves saving. Keep it on, CBS!!!
Posted 04/04/2008 3:55am
I think Moonlight is a excellent show. I'm gald to see a Red Cross blood drive is the choice of action for Moonlight fans to pledge their support. Many lives are saved from blood transfusions, it is a very worthy cause and a fantastic show. Great to see Alex showing his support by becoming a spokesman for the Red Cross!
Posted 04/04/2008 12:37am
Anything that supports the Red Cross is a good reason. What caught my eye was donating hair clippings for Cavemen. Now that's gross, imagine getting someone elses hair in the mail, spilling all over your desk.
Posted 04/03/2008 7:37pm
Why bother. This is exactly why CBS shouldn't have given in to the Jericho fanatics. Now every time lame a$$ show that has a overly emoptional fan base gets cancelled, somebody will think this kind of stunt will work. At least this time it's going to a good cause. By the way DON'T expect this to work, crackers didn't save The Black Donnelys.
Posted 04/03/2008 4:22pm
thats a little wierd. couldn't they think of anything else to send... like idk.. fake plastic vampire fangs or something..
Posted 04/03/2008 3:40pm
An interesting idea with a great benefit for the Red Cross. What did they do with all those nuts for Jericho? Mmmmmm... nuts.....
Posted 04/03/2008 12:49pm
Wasn't this show called Forever Knight once?
Well at least this time a worthy cause is being used to help the show and people.

count-chocula : To ease worries, here's a excerpt from the American Red Cross's faq (http://www.givelife2.org/donor/faq.asp):

What will happen to my blood after I donate?
Each blood donation is assigned a unique computer barcode number, which will identify it throughout its path from the donor to a hospital patient. Immediately after the blood donation, the blood is placed in transport containers designed to keep it at a safe temperature until it reaches a Red Cross component laboratory. Samples of the blood donation are simultaneously sent to one of nine Red Cross National Testing Laboratories to be tested for transmissible diseases. In the component lab, the blood is separated into its components: red blood cells, platelets and plasma. The products are then placed in quarantined, temperature-controlled refrigeration units until the test results are received (usually 12-16 hours later) and the blood can be released for distribution or destroyed. From local distribution centers, the blood is transported to hospitals based on patient need. Hospital personnel then transfuse the blood or blood products to a patient in need.

Come on this is utterly ridiuclous... and dangerous. If one of the fans has a disease (god forbid) like AIDS and they send blood, well...
Posted 04/03/2008 7:11am
I liked it better when it was called "Angel"! But I like giving blood to help those who need it. Sign me up!
Posted 04/03/2008 5:49am
I have my fingers crossed for this show to be back next season. I dont know if crossing my fingers is any good to save a vampire themed show but i love it to bits.

i think the problem lies in the face that its no CBS - they have a reputation for destroying cult favorite shows jericho for startes....
Posted 04/03/2008 5:33am
I really hope this works.
Moonlight is awesome!!!
Posted 04/03/2008 4:09am
Great show and a great cause. I hope Moonlight gets a second season
Posted 04/02/2008 11:26pm
i love this how and really hope it comes back...right now tho...i dont have much faith in CBS
Posted 04/02/2008 9:37pm
I hope it does come back. I really like this show. I think what people are doing is really great.
Posted 04/02/2008 9:13pm
you said it asutho, moonlight is a terrible vampire show & an awful show period, but at least this campaign is helping people.
Posted 04/02/2008 8:26pm
i love the show hope to see it back
Posted 04/02/2008 7:19pm
While I thought the pilot of Moonlight was one of the worst I had ever seen, the show got steadily better. Hopefully this will let the second season get even better...though nothing will reach Buffy territory.
Posted 04/02/2008 6:50pm
I started to watch Moonlight because I am a Blood Ties fan. It only took me half an episode to become a fan of Moonlight. I am looking forward to another full season!?!?
Posted 04/02/2008 6:08pm
Moonlight is a great show. I hope it's renewed for another season...
Posted 04/02/2008 5:53pm
"MOONLIGHT" deserves a chance...even if it's perceived in some quarters as a "watered-down" version of "FOREVER KNIGHT"....
Posted 04/02/2008 5:32pm
Moonlight sucks.... but at least their campaign is helping people
Posted 04/02/2008 5:26pm
Its an amazing show i want to contribute as well
Posted 04/02/2008 5:22pm
Moonlight Rules!!
Posted 04/02/2008 4:10pm
The show is not worth donating my blood to...
Posted 04/02/2008 4:08pm
It's a pretty good idea and it's a good and helpful cause. That would've been hilarious though if they had decided to send bags of blood to CBS.
