This episode marks Bea Arthur's very first appearance as Maude Finlay. We would later see her on the set of Maude at the end of the season two. (edit)

Quotes

add »
Maude: You can have your chair, Archie. Just don't move around too much or you'll crush your brains. (edit)
Archie: (referring to the Cream of Wheat with cheese that Maude has served him) It looks like something I ate and lost. (edit)
Maude: (about FDR) That man had charisma.
Archie: I don't care if he was sick. (edit)
(Maude is sitting defiantly in Archie's chair, and Archie is looking for a way to rile her.)
Archie: This country was ruined by Franklin Delano Roosevelt!
Maude: (slowly turning her head to address Archie) You're fat!
Archie: Sticks and stones may break my bones, but Franklin Delano Roosevelt!
Edith (from her chair): Archie, you promised never to say that name again in front of Maude!
Archie (to Edith): Franklin Delano Roosevelt!
Edith (to Maude): He doesn't, don't mean nothing. His whole family was for Roosevelt.
Archie: That was for two terms but that was it! We didn't know the guy was going to hang onto the job like a pope!
Maude: He hung on (stands up) to save the country! The people adored him, he was a saint. (points finger up) That man had charisma!
Archie: I don't care if he was sick! He always had his big mouth open at them fireside chats!
Maude: Those fireside chats kept this country informed. And one 'My friends. . .' from Roosevelt was worth a barrelfull of 'Let me make this perfectly clear' s!
Archie: Oh! Now you're rapping my President, huh? Well, let me tell you one thing about Richard E. Nixon! He knows how to keep his wife Pat home. Roosevelt could never do that with Eleanor. She was always out on the loose! Running around with the coloreds! Telling them they was getting the short end of the stick. She was the one who discovered the coloreds in this country, we never knew they was there! (edit)
Maude: That sweet Edith, I'd die for her.
Archie: You buried 2 husbands, Maude. Ain't that enough?
Maude: It's only 8 a.m. and that foul mouth of yours is already open for business. (edit)

Trivia

add »
Maude is said to have two ex-husbands here, but no mention of Chester or Barney. For that matter there is no mention of Carol or Maude's present husband Walter (of course their characters were not invented until it was decided Maude would be a spin-off, but this episode implies that Maude is not presently married, when later on in her series she should have already been married to Walter by this time). (edit)
Mike must really feel sick not to get in the middle of the political discussion between Archie and Maude. For once he has someone else on his side. (edit)
