At home Von feeds her fish and gets ready to go to work.
At the hospital Terri arrives with a bicycle in the boot with Sophie. Peter comes up to talk to them and once Terri leaves he asks her to come and see her.
Josie is interrupted by Jared pulling back the curtains and isn't in a particularly good mood. He goes off to see a Mr Quong who is worried about Sally, his wife.
Jaz arrives and tells a Jimmy Dwyer to wait a moment when he sees Von and runs up to hug her calling her Evie.
In another room Connor and Bron discuss who Jimmy could be in relation to Von, an old boyfriend maybe? Steph walks in and isn't so convinced they are old lovers, but Connor and Bron bet $10, but Connor will have to prove that they were once that close.
Jimmy talks to Von as he unpacks his things in his room. Jimmy is losing his voice to Cancer because of smoking and left it too long. Von is surprised that his wife isn't there, but Christine left him and his second wife Laura died long again leaving him on his own.
Josie lies in bed smiling to herself when Jared walks in and then goes to see Sally next door. Jared tells Terri about her condition and how Dr Gibbs isn't even sure about what is wrong with her.
Jimmy wants Von to assure him that nothing will be left behind after this surgery. Once before some shrapnel was left behind before and he constantly goes off at the airport security. Von tells him that he has to give up the smokes right from this day forward - he though remembers that she first started smoking in Vietnam but refuses to admit to him that he still smokes.
Another patient, Nura, is admitted and Connor goes to take her to a room. Nura's mother insists that Jaz take him to the room, but since she isn't a nurse Connor tries to assure her that he is one and will take good care of Nura. The mother is interrupted in her objection by Terri.
Outside, Bron catches Von having a cigarette. She tells her that she is needed back inside.
Connor is confused about the reaction from Nura and her mother. Steph asks why Nura has been admitted and it is due to an infection caused by female circumcision. Jaz thinks that it is awful and Steph says that it is against the law. Terri though says it was probably done 6 or so year ago, which was before the family moved to Australia.
Sally is still not any better. She says that in her back and neck is where the pain is; it feels like she has been bitten. Jared goes to see Dr Gibbs about the new information. Josie complains to Jared about them talking when he goes to leave.
Jimmy gets moved into a shared ward by Connor who tries to get some information out of his about his relationship with Von. Connor didn't know that Von had been stationed at Nuidat together during Vietnam - but they were never lovers. He starts to tell Connor about Von in the war just as Von is passing by.
Von goes to see Terri about Jimmy being moved. Von wants him treated better because he was a Vietnam treatment, but Terri tells her that Nura needed to have the room. Von isn't impressed.
Outside Connor gives the ten dollars to Bron and sits down to have coffee with her and Steph. Bron wonders why Von has never talked about it and Steph says that it is probably because they have never been in a war themselves, and thus could never understand what she had been through.
Nura is settled into her new room and her mother watches over her. Sophie asks her if she thinks she can give a urine sample. With Steph's help they lift Nura onto a bedpan. Sophie tells her that afterwards she will help give her a wash, but Nura says that she is more than capable of doing it herself. Her mother is asked to leave to give Nura some privacy but refuses to leave her daughter. Sophie lifts up the sheet to check on whether Nura has been able to urinate and both her and Steph's eyes are wide open at the site. The mother demands to know what is wrong, but Steph says nothing.
At the nurse's station, Sophie and Steph are horrified at the sight of Nura's circumcision.
Luke talks to Jimmy about his cancer and has made a decision about getting an implant instead of an instrument, which he would have to clean.
Jared takes care of Sally as he performs a lumber puncture and she is in a lot of pain. Next door Josie hears Sally's sobbing and asks Bron what Jared is doing to her. Bron explains it and then adds that she hopes Josie won't ever have to need one done. Jared argues with Dr Gibbs over whether it was necessary to put Sally through it but she insists that it was. Josie looks to the curtain and then to Jared.
Luke tells Nura's mother that she will need an operation. She demands that a female surgeon does it, but Luke is all there is. Sophie watches on as Nura said that the pain only lasts a couple of days a few times a month. Sophie then asks Nura how long it takes her to go to the toilet, to which she replies about ten minutes; Sophie goes onto tell her that most women don't even take a minute and it takes longer because of the circumcision. She tells them that she is to be married and that if the stitches are to be cut by her husband, if he suspects that she has been unfaithful he won't marry Nura and she will be an outcast.
Outraged at Nura's treatment, Sophie goes to see Terri to see if it is child abuse. Nura though is over sixteen and able to make her own decision. They disagree over the way each other sees the treatment and Sophie walks of angry and annoyed.
Outside Von is having another smoke and is this time caught by Steph. She says that her father was in Vietnam too and that he doesn't talk about it. Steph tries to get her to open up to it but it only make Von angry. Inside Von wants to talk to Jimmy, but he isn't in his bed.
Sophie goes to talk to Nura in private, after her mother leaves. Sophie tells her that some of the damage can be repaired when Dr Gibbs enters unannounced. Sophie's response is to send the doctor out and then tells Nura that it isn't her fault she was mutilated. Terri gives instructions to Jaz that only immediate family to go into Nura's room to prevent everyone else from popping in to 'have a look'.
Von finds Jimmy outside on a bench. She tells him that he isn't that bad off and that he will still be able to talk after the operation. He feels like his time is over because he is a salesman and he can't use the machine. Jimmy tells Von that the operation is off. Jimmy compares what he is going through to Vietnam, he is angry he made it but Bill didn't and thinks that his life doesn't matter, nothing does. Von tells him that she believes in him and that he shouldn't give up. In response Jimmy picks up a cigarette and lights it. Von walks off.
Von re-enters the ward looking for Luke. They are interrupted by Sally in convulsions. Josie is worried and has gotten out of bed. Von tells her that it is plain to see what she has - Dengue Fever caused by mozzie bites. She leaves the room and asks Luke what Jimmy's chances are. After that she then goes to see Peter about getting a favour. Von really wants Peter to talk to Jimmy about the treatment.
Peter finds Jimmy packing up his things and he introduces himself. Jimmy knows that Von was the one who asked him to come and speak to him, but Jimmy tells him he doesn't want the operation and he isn't scared of it. Jimmy is convinced that Agent Orange is the cause of his cancer, that and the war itself because he didn't start smoking until then.
Terri goes into see Nura and to try and calm her down. Nura has been crying and she tells Terri that the nurse told her she was mutilated and she can't understand why she said that because women in her culture have had it done to them for hundreds of years.
Outside Terri talks to Sophie to get her to see that in Nura's eyes they are different. Sophie argues that Nura doesn't understand the pain that she will be in for the rest of her life. Terri tells Sophie that she is to stay out of the room. Angry, Sophie goes and vents to Peter about Nura's life. She gets herself worked up with her concern about Nura's life and Peter suspects that there is more to Sophie's anger than just about Nura. Sophie breaks down.
Jared checks on Josie who asks him if Sally is okay, he is surprised by this. Dr Gibbs continues to ask if Sally has been out of the country but he insists that she has been anywhere but the city in ten years. Sally tells them that her family is just trying to protect her. She tells them that Sally isn't her name and that she only recently came to the country - by boat.
Von goes to talk to Peter about Jimmy, and he tells her that he has PTSP, which has been caused by the Vietnam War. Von dismisses it and says that it can't be.
At home Von lights up a cigarette and looks over her medals and photos from when she served as a nurse in Vietnam. She picks up one photo but it is too painful for her to watch. Looking over at her fish tank she sees that one of them has died and is floating at the top of the water, she picks it out and starts to cry.
Terri looks in on Nura who is having trouble sleeping. Nura isn't sure whether she should sign it or not. Terri talks to her about her own decision to be a Nun and what it means to her. She goes on to tell her that it needs to be her own decision about what she is going to do.
Jimmy is lying on his bed when Von comes in to see him. He has forgiven her for sending Peter to talk to him and has bought along a picture of them with Bill. She wants him to have the operation because of Bill. Von tells him that they had had the news about the ambush and how because he had more serious injuries he was one of the first one in and Bill didn't. She had wanted him to live a good life in place of hers and Bills. She tells him that sometimes she wants to turn back time, but still Bill wouldn't have made it, his injuries were too bad. What she says does the trick as Jimmy starts to reconsider having the surgery.
Terri is having a drink when Sophie approaches her and apologises for her own behaviour the previous day. She tells Terri that she has started to pick up the pieces of her own life. Terri tells her that Nura will be alright.
Steph and Luke are both pleased that Nura is having the operation and Steph wants him to fix everything, but he says that she only wants the minimum done and he will respect the decision.
John Quong approaches Von and tells him that Sally wants to talk to him. Sally thanks her for knowing what was wrong with her, and Von tells her she knew what was wrong with her because she served over there is Vietnam. Sally tells her that if she ever returns there then she would be welcome for dinner. This embarrasses her slightly.
Von enters Jimmy's ward to find him still there, but his operation was rescheduled and he is still going to have it.
Sophie gets some ice for Nura after the surgery; Steph checks to see what Luke did to her. He is outside having a drink and tells her that he had no choice, it wasn't his decision what happened to her. Steph is angry and annoyed and Luke walks away from her.
Nura is awake and Sophie apologises to her for what she said. Sophie watches as Nura's fiancee enters with flowers and she smiles at Nura's mother - who returns it.
At home Von has framed the picture of herself, Jimmy and Bill and bought some new fish for her tank.
