Ally and Larry’s relationship comes to an end after mis-communications and mistrust. After a dinner that includes a failed attempt at a marriage proposal by Larry, Ally’s insecurities increase. As she becomes more doubtful, Larry also is overcome by fears of failure, based on past relationships, and considers any hitch an omen that he shouldn’t continue down this road with Ally. He calls his ex-wife Helena for advice, breaking a lunch date with Ally to meet with her. Feeling blue, Ally and John come across Larry and Helena eating ice cream and playing with the whipped cream. Ally becomes angry and pours the sundae toppings over Larry, storming off. Later, after secluding herself, Ally breaks up with Larry, feeling that she could no longer trust him, and that an inevitable dumping was about to occur by him anyway. Larry tries to talk with Ally, but to no use. Ally admits her love for him to her mother, along with her embarrassment of wanting a man in her life. Larry ponders life without Ally. At the end, when life looks bleakest, Ally looks hopefully when Elaine tells her Larry stopped by. Her hopes are dashed when Elaine tells her he left a note. Ally doesn’t need to read it-she already knows what it says. Elaine opens it anyway, to read what Ally knew would be there-“I love you. Goodbye.”
In another storyline, Richard has gotten a call from Jane in Los Angeles. Some nude photos of her are to appear in a national magazine, much to her dismay. She claims to not have understood the contract she signed, and knows her family will be devastated. Richard tries to assist her, and ends up in court trying to block the printing of the pictures. He relies on help from John, who is assisting him from Boston, via phone and headset. When the line is broken, it’s up to Richard to wing it on his own. While initially faltering, in the end he is able to make a point, and Jane wins her case. Disappointed with life in LA, Richard offers her a job at Cage and Fish and the chance to try her luck in Boston in the theater. She takes him up on his offer.
