1. Should Liza have been Ling? | 01/05/2006 1:59pm
I just finished watching Season 5 on Paramount Comedy, and it seemed rather obvious that they brought Liza in to replace Ling, who left about 8 episodes previously. Richard even compared her to Ling on a few occasions, and when I was watching the series finale with my dad who also enjoys the show, he remarked "Where's Ling? Everyone else is there, where is she?". It just seemed like Ling should have been in the last episode, and that final farewell lineup, and Lucy Liu should have taken just a couple of days out to be in it. Any thoughts?

Nice idea, I think Liza was the new Ling but not as sophistocated - she did become Ling with Richard's infatuation with her and eventual marriage - clearly would have happened with Ling if she was still around!

Ling wanted to come back but I think the producers said no because they wanted to give closure to the Richard character and Ling would not have any place there or something like that....

Still, it seems stupid to me that Ling wasn't there. I just really wanted to see her on the series finale. She was one of the best characters on the show, and she should have been there, although Liza was there too.

I totally agree! I cannot believe they did not bring Ling into the series finale! And, in WOMAN, there is solid proof that Ling and Richard's relationship was deeper than it appeared to be. I felt the Liza thing was rushed and your idea is great. Now that I think about it, it makes sense! But Liza does not come CLOSE to Ling! And lets be honest, would Liza and Richard REALLY last longer than Ling and Richard?

It's true, a return from Ling would have been wicked and she really was one of the best characters - she had great scenes with nearly everyone as her character was funny in different ways with different characters.

I agree too. Ling was amazing and should have been in the final. I liked Liza too, but Ling was just th one Richard shuld have married. But hey, maybe she'll be his second wife...

I completely agree. I think Ling should've been there instead of Liza. It very much felt like they had brought in Liza just because they couldn't get Lucy Liu to play Ling one last time. I kinda felt cheated because I knew that it should've been Ling & Richard gettting married and Ling should've been there outside the bar in the final scene saying goodbye to Ally.

With all respect to the writer of the show but he seemed confused in more than one occasion. He brought in that blonde girl who wanted to be an actress in season 4 and made a special connection between her and Richard, as John said, that girl Jane brought a sensitive side of Richard that we never seen before. I believe the writer wanted her to be the one who teaches Richard how to truly love someone. But then the writer made her disappear with no explanation as if she was just some girl. Then he brought Ling back after she came a judge just to check on Richard and be sure he is ok.And Richard told her how her heart is so kind and how that meant to him And they kissed. Which made their relationship seem deeper, But then he got her out as nothing happened. And then he brought Liza and said she is his true love even though nothing deep happened between them to call it true love! Really confusing!

I agree here. Jane or Ling could've potentially been Richard's true love (personally, I like to imagine it as Ling), not Liza. Liza just kinda came out of nowhere and was a Ling-clone, only not as funny or as likeable, and within mere episodes she gets married to Richard. Ling & Richard had over 3 seasons of build-up so it was a shame to see it just brushed under the carpet like that. But, there was one redeemable Liza/Richard scene. It was the one where Liza said she was scared of getting too close to Richard coz he could see the sweeter side of her (or something like that anyway). If it wasn't for that scene, I'd have put down their relationship as totally contrived (though I do still think it is a little contrived and somewhat lame).
