At the beginning of the episode, Trixie, Spud, and Jake sneak through the city following a truck. They snatch three school yearbooks, so they can get it before everyone else in school. But by the next day, Jake hates this year's yearbook. Because of dragon business, Jake has totally missed his whole 8th grade year (he even missed picture day). With Graduation approaching, Jake decides to spend this last week of school getting the most out of his 8th grade year. But right at that moment, Gramps calls Jake for a dragon emergency and to come immediately to the shop.

Jake rushes to Gramps shop, for the emergency. But Gramps pulls out a timer, saying it was only a test. But it took him 12 minutes to get here, and that dragon business might be slow but that doesn't mean he can take his time. Lao Shi then explains that Jake will be spending the next three days with Sun and Haley, studying two thousand years of Dragon Council Bylaws while he and Fu Dog go to a Dragon Council Retreat. Disappointed, Jake tries to get out of dragon training just this week, to enjoy his last days in school. However, Gramps says no, saying that his duties can't be shadowed over 'chilling' and 'hanging with peeps.'

Jake rushes back in his P.E outfit, late for gym. But when he gets there, he realizes that everyone was picking partners for graduation. But by the time Jake was there, everyone already had partners. Jake asked about Danica, wondering if she had a partner. But of course, she already did. Jake's only option was a CPR dummy. Even angrier, Jake wishes that there was some way he could get out of dragon business for one week, just so he can enjoy what's left of his 8th grade year.

Just then, Brad calls everyone to announce that he is doing a prank on Rotwood. An exploding cake that when Rotwood cuts into it, it will explode all over his office. But after it happens, someone told on him, and he ends up suspended. The suspension of Brad, gives Jake an idea.

Back at home, Haley looks up a Dragon Council Bylaws book about behavior deemed irresponsible by the Dragon Council shall result in the immediate suspension of all dragon powers. But quickly, Haley realizes Jake's plan. Jake tells Haley that if he gets suspended for the week, Haley gets to be the American Dragon during that time. Having a wish come true, Haley decides to help Jake get his dragon powers suspended, but Jake already has an idea on how to do so. He sends a exploding cake, straight the Dragon Council. When the cake explodes, Jake is send to Isle of Draco, and gets his dragon chi taken out of him.

Sun prepares Haley for being the new American Dragon. But Haley reassures her that she will not let anyone down. At first she is excited about being the American Dragon, but after a while, the stress of it gets to her. She starts being tardy for class, and even failed a test! This was a lot tougher, than Haley thought it would be.

Meanwhile, Jake is living up his only week at being a regular human. He goes to the 'Make fun of Rotwood' Party and sings at the schools karaoke night. And at the last minute, he meets up with Danica and finds out since Brad got suspended she has no graduation partner. Jake and Danica then decide that they could go together, and Jake makes a promise that there will be interruptions this time.

Haley is then called by Sun about Chang and Bananas in Magus Bazaar. Seems those two were looking for two ingredients, Hydra Scales and a Phoenix Feather. As Chang and Sun fight, Bananas looks for the ingredients. Haley charges after him, but Bananas pulls off Essence of Troll off a shelf and pours it on top of Haley's face. With that chance, Bananas grabs his needed ingredients, and he and Chang fly away.

Back at the shop, Haley's face looks horrible. Half of her face, is a troll face!!! They all try to be nice, but it looks really ugly. But then, Fu looks up the two ingredients that Chang was after, and they all realize that she was working on spell to bring the Dark Dragon back to power! There only needed ingredient, was the chi (or blood) of the American Dragon. Haley wonders why Chang didn't go after her for her chi, but Gramps explains for all she knows, Chang doesn't know that Haley is the American Dragon.

At that exact moment, Jake meets up with Danica just before going into his house. Jake promises to meet up with her, later on tonight for the graduation. But out of the shadows, Chang grabs Jake and takes him away.

Sun, Haley, and Gramps hurry down to Jake's house, only to find Jake's backpack in front of his house. Out of paranoia, Haley blurts out that this is her fault and accidentally tells them about the prank Jake did to get his powers suspended on purpose. Gramps is furious, but Haley yells at them saying that the job for American Dragon is hard and all Jake wanted was a couple days off. After, Sun and Haley go to look for Jake, as Grandpa heads off to the Dragon Council.

Back with Jake, Chang has chained him to a rock while she pulls out his chi. With a giant flame in the middle of the construction site, Bananas tosses in the Hydra Scales and the Phoenix Feather. Chang puts in Jake's chi, and waits. But...nothing happens. Confused, Chang remembers that Jake's chi must take dragon form, which it didn't. They realize that Jake isn't a dragon anymore, and that they person they were looking for was Haley!!

Just then, the three are joined by Sun and Haley. As Chang and Sun fight, Haley breaks free Jake. But Chang and Sun's fight doesn't last long, as Chang knocks Sun to the ground. She then hovers over to Haley, realizing that she needs her chi, to make the spell work.

Just then, Gramps enters into the area. He throws Jake his dragon chi, and Jake starts to revert into a dragon. Once Jake turns back into a dragon, Chang comes after him trying to get his chi. Bananas then jumps into a crane near the area, trying to knock over Jake with the hook end of the crane. Haley jumps into it, to stop him. The two of them hit the controls, and the side of the crane crashes into the mountain, while the hook of the crane scratches Jake's arm. From the side of that mountain, rocks tumble downward, knocking Chang to the ground. Haley kicks Bananas out of the crane, over to Chang. Then a lot more rocks start to fall, making Bananas and Chang retreat in a cave to escape the falling rocks.

Jake then explains to Gramps how the prank wasn't an accident, but Gramps tells him that he already knows. His punishment though, was that he would cut his dragon training in half this year. Lao Shi tells Jake that he trains him hard, because he knows the enemies he will have to face. But then again, he is only 14 and should have some time to just hang out.

After the battle, the four of them fly off and head down to the graduation. There, Jake receives his diploma!!

But then, back at the construction site, the hook of the crane is hanging above the ashes of the fire where the spell was being set. A drop of Jake's blood on the crane drips off, and falls into the ashes. Just then, a beam of light comes out from the ground, and the Dark Dragon rises out of the ground, and lets out a loud roar of anger. It seems the Dark Dragon, lives once more.
