Jess and Berta Gonzalez have lived in East Los Angeles their entire lives. Their adult children decide it is time for their parents to move out of the old neighborhood and they buy them a brand new condo on the other side of town. Nina, Jess and Berta's liberal activist daughter, moves in temporarily to help things go smoothly. But complications arise and it turns out the old neighborhood is harder to leave than anyone thought.

2. The Sewing Machine

It's been three months since Berta's death. Nina has moved into her parents' home to take on her mother's role. Pablito rejects Nina because she is nothing like Grandma Berta. A family crisis ensues when Vangie wants to take Berta's sewing machine as a keepsake.

A comet flies over Los Angeles casting a magical spell over the Gonzalez household. The comet causes everyone to fall in and out of love. Aunt Dora plans a surprise wedding for her daughter Christy. But a tall, dark, handsome stranger out of Dora's past appears and it maybe that Aunt Dora turns out to be a bride.

4. La Llorona (The Weeping Woman) (1)

Cisco tells Pablito the story of La Llorona, (The Weeping Woman), an old Mexican folktale about a mother who loses her children. Nina, an immigration attorney, fights desperately to reunite Elena, an immigrant mother who has been separated from her American-born child due to deportation.

Cisco continues telling Pablito the story of the La Llorona, (The Weeping Woman), as Nina battles the legal system to reunite Elena, an immigrant mother with her baby. Laura, Pablito's drug addicted mother, haunts the Gonzalez' in hope of having a chance to be with her son once again.

6. Circle of Fire

Esteban heads a mentoring program at the fire department with at risk kids in rival gangs. Esteban struggles with the kids because they cannot overcome their rival affiliations. When a nearby fire breaks out, the kids must work together to save their own neighborhood. Meanwhile, Ofelia is shocked to learn the truth about Esteban's past.

7. Crash Boom Love (1)

Nina has to fight City Hall to keep the local rec center open and keep Latino youth off the streets. She is heartbroken to discover that it is her own boyfriend who is trying to shut the center down. Nina must make a difficult choice.

Nina and Gordie organize a protest mural. After Vangie and her family get involved in the demonstration, her daughter Tiffany takes up with a mural artist.

9. Mexican Revolution

At the annual family reunion, Jess tells the story of his grandmother, La Catrina, a female soldier in the Mexican Revolution. The family is transformed into a silent film version of the tale. Meanwhile, a revolution is brewing between Nina and Vangie and Jess might be falling in love.

The events of September 11 trigger memories that Jess has of his own experiences during the Korean War.

Esteban and Ofelia are at a painful crossroads, and suddenly Pablito disappears. A harrowing journey (shot in one continuous take) begins as Esteban must find Pablito and finally deal with his past.

14. The Father

In this episode we find Pablito safely at home with Nina and Jess. Esteban, however, is missing and must be found to report to his parole officer the next morning or he'll be in big trouble. As Jess searches the city for his son, he remembers Esteban as a young favorite child and as a rebellious teenager. And he recollects his own behavior that drove a wedge between father and son.

15. The Glass Ceiling

Vangie receives a very big order from an important customer, and if she succeeds in completing it on time the possibilities for the future look very promising...

Unfortunately the work takes up so much of her time that she neglects her own family. One night she comes home very late to find little Scott sleeping with his dad instead of in his own bed. He wakes up when she enters the room and in a very sleepy, somewhat disappointed voice tells his mom that she missed his baseball game... his words (and something her mom once said) later make her realize that her family should come first no matter what and she decides to make things right again!

16. The Fighting Fridas

Jess joins Nina's all-girl Fighting Fridas football team as team coach. But does not find it as easy as he first expected when their star quarterback is forced to miss the big match.

17. The Barber Shop

Jess's barbershop has been the neighborhood men's social club forever but the shop turns upside down when Nina drops off Yoli, a 13 year-old street girl who wants to spend the day with Jess and learn all about the art of barbering.

18. The Masked Eagle (1)

Pete's fishing trip is ruined after he is sent to hospital only to learn that he has diabetes and is going blind. Jess looks back to 1942 where reports of unidentified planes flying over Los Angeles were made. On the way back from LA, they were attacked by a anti-Mexican gang.

After Pete is sent to a nursing home, Jess attempts to move Pete into the Gonzales house. Meanwhile, Dora gives Pablito a few dancing lessons after he finds out that Ofelia could be returning.

20. The Journey (1)

Jess, Esteban and Nina all head off to Mexico and all for different reasons. Nina is there to deliver an aid to the people of chiapas. Meanwhile, Jess visits his brother Leon and Esteban continues to search for Ofelia.

21. The Journey (2)

After days of searching, Esteban finally finds Ofelia. And Nina unluckily encounters a group of mexican rebels.

22. La Casa (The House)

While the Gonzalez family re-paints their house, they remember their earlier years where things were not as easy for the family. As they come to and end, Jess' grandmother who built the house joins them.
