1. Whitney and Plus Size Models | 03/07/2008 10:19am

Is it just me or were they really really wrong in putting Whitney in a skirt, shirt and bra when the other girls posed in real lingerie? When she was up there I thought it was just a normal photo shoot with clothes and not underwear. I know she is a plus sized model, but I didnt think her proportions are bad. We saw her in a bikini on the first episode and she looked great. Even tyra said something. Is this just yet another example of the plus size model getting the shaft?

I dont understand why the wardrobe people dont have fierce plus size clothing for those girls. In the real world, why would you model for, let say JC Pennys, and they tell you that they dont have clothes your size. That is ridiculous. No designer or clothing store would hire a person who couldnt fit into their clothes. So why does ANTM have plus size models in the first place if they dont have any clothes for them to fit into. Its like they are handicapped already. Either exclude plus size models or have a separate show.

That's exactly what Tocarra kept telling them - "Why have me on if there aren't any clothes for me?" And I thought it was ridiculous they put WHITNEY is covering clothes. I thought she would look best in lingerie - some of the girls looked like little boys (cough, Fatima Aimee cough) - there were no curves! Besides, lingerie models are curvy - how are they going to fill anything out otherwise?

I did like Whitney's outfit, but it wasn't lingerie, and I imagine she was pretty insulted - I know I would be!

The thing is...the "plus" size on ANTM is NORMAL in real life. These are not Lane Bryant size (nothing's wrong with that either) but they are like 10-12!! Models are 0-2 if you're a 4 you're big! IT's frustrating when they put a "plus size" in there and then don't have clothes. AND remember last cycle the girl got bashed for LOSING WEIGHT? I'll never forget Nigel telling her she was getting too thin. No wonder they all have eating disorders!!!!!!!!

That was so ridiculous, I felt so bad for Whitney! I thought she took it with so much grace, tough. Her outfit was beautiful but it, apart from not being lingerie, incapacitated her to move!!! Sometimes I think Tyra brings the "plus-sized" girls in just to humiliate her. I mean, I'm not skinny like those girls, and I feel really bad when Tyra says someone beautiful and completely-normal like Whitney is a plus-sized girl ("plus-sized" is just a ridiculous euphemism for fat). Tyra talks so much about models being relatable, Whitney is exactly the type of girl ANTM viewers can relate to.

(That comment Nigel made about the girl losing weight was, if I'm not mistaken, about Sarah last cycle. It really, really bothered me too. I'm over Nigel because of that and everything he said to and about Jenah).

I don't think it's so bad to call full-figured models "plus-size models" as a way of distinguishing them from the anorexic sticks that are ubiquitous in the fashion industry. I don't mind the label. Since it applies to someone like Whitney, it actually means "curvy and gorgeous."

I hated the fact that they put Whity in an ugly corset.Why? She has the best figure of any model on the show this season. Why hide it? I loved her photos in the white ribbon outfit. Those were stunning, and they showed just how beautiful her lingerie pictures WOULD have looked.

I don't think the ugly corset was Tyra's fault this time (at least I'd like to hope it wasn't, since Tyra expressed dissatisfaction with the wardrobe during the judging). I hope for the rest of the show, they allow Whitney's figure to be shown off as it should be. She's a stunning beauty.

I SO agree! The "plus-sized"-models are actually just normal girls. They are not fat or thick. They have curves and they are beautiful. Tyra is always telling us that she wants to be a good role-model for us, but I can't see that she is when she calls normal women for plus-sized.

it's not tyra it's the modelling industry. that's just the nature of things.

I definitely agree. Covering them up with clothing only makes it more obvious that they're plus-sized. They should receive equal oppurtunities as the other girls. Some of them look very very thin. Why not give them something to eat?

I do agree with the comment that the modeling industry is calling them plus size and not just tyra. I dont have a problem with that label. It is impossible for a plus size model to become super model status. Yes, there are some great full figured models out there that have been very sucessful, but I seriously doubt a plus size girl could be the next elle or tyra. It would take a show like ANTM or Make me a supermodel(god aweful show btw!) to launch a career for plus size model and put her out there.

Has anyone notice that there are no plus size male models? Chubby is not even exceptable for a guy in modelling, but no one seems to bat an eye at that. I have been wondering why is that? Any thoughts??? Is it because our society defines a good looking male as thin or muscular or both?? I know underwear and swimsuit require a good body, but what about regular clothes?

Girls these days only look up to these anorexic little sticks that star on TV shows or shake their @sses in music videos. A lot of these girls on ANTM are even thinner than those "role models." Whitney is beautiful. She should flaunt what she's got and the other girls lack, but the industry isn't ready for that yet. Fashion is an art, and most designers think their creations look better on thin girls. So "plus-size" models (or the chicks with the bodies most females will resemble) are not given a fair chance. They're always gonna get the short end of the stick, like a completely different wardrobe because there's nothing "in their size."

And now I'm done ranting about the unfairness of the fashion industry.

I don't have problems with the fashion industry because I don't give sh**s about what some crusty italian man says is beautiful. If the fashion industry thinks a beautiful woman is one with no hips, no breasts, and face only a mother could love then they can fawn over her by themselves. I'll keep my womanly curves and all the people who them. The fashion industry can go fu** themselves.

the main reason there arent any plus size mens models is because there just isnt a market for it. Most guys dont look at what male models wear and say "wow I want to wear something like that!". Guys generally go to the store and whatever LOOKS (not fits because most dont even try on clothes they are buying) the best and go home.
