[UPDATE] Alan Tudyk will play a gay man; Jerry O'Connell checks into The Inn. Also--an Angel vet joins Dollhouse.

Sci-fi favorite Alan Tudyk is trading in his pilot's wings for a pilot. The actor, who gained fame as a crew member of Joss Whedon's cult hit Firefly, has been cast in an upcoming comedy pilot.

Hey Tudyk, the camera is over here, buddy.

Hey Tudyk, the camera is over here, buddy.

The show comes from the minds of David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, the creators of the well-received Will & Grace. Sticking close to their formula for success, the new comedy will focus on two men, one of which is gay (Tudyk), who are best friends and business partners, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Since Firefly left the air in 2003, Tudyk has appeared in CSI, 3:10 to Yuma, and Knocked Up, and has done voices for Ice Age and video game Halo 3. He was also cast in Barry Sonnenfeld's new pilot about ruthless lawyers.

Actor Jerry O'Connell, who played the fat kid in Stand By Me and recently headlined ABC's Carpoolers, has found a new gig in The Inn. O'Connell will play the general manager at a posh New York hotel.

The signing does not bode well for Carpoolers, which ABC has left idling on the side of the road. No clear cancellation notice has been given out by the network, but with O'Connell looking for other projects, it's likely one will be coming soon.

Elsewhere, Louis C.K. and Pamela Adlon (both from Lucky Louie) will cowrite and costar in a new comedy for CBS, The Pretender's Andrea Parker will star with Bernie Mac in Fox's Starting Under, and 24's Harry Lennix has joined Whedon's new show Dollhouse.

[UPDATE] Dollhouse's Eliza Dushku won't be the only actress formerly of a Joss Whedon show. On the Joss Whedon fan site Whedonverse, the man himself chimed in to announce that Amy Acker will play the recurring role of Dr. Claire Saunders. He also says that newcomer Miracle Laurie will play November, a recurring character that does not appear in the pilot.

Acker has been all over television, and is best known as Winifred "Fred" Burkle from Whedon's Angel and Kelly Peyton in Alias.

Alan Tudyk, what a great actor. His acting depth is great from Steve the Pirate in Dodgeball to Wash in Firefly/Serenity, A Knight's Tale, The Ice Age movies, etc. I hope this one sticks!
