Goober's plans to drum up business for the filling station by starting a giveaway promotion goes awry when because of a miscommunication with the printers, Floyd wins a $200 prize. hide show

The last episode is a good one for Floyd. Even though his voice is often slurred (particularly at the beginning scenes) and they use a stand in to drive the car and walk around the barber shop for him, Howard McNear is still really funny. It's a tribute to Andy Griffith and his team that they obviously went to a lot of trouble to make this episode work while not revealing Mcnear was partly paralyzed. McNear gets final scenes with Andy, Aunt Bea and Goober. The next season he supposedly retired and was replaced by Emmett, but Emmett was nowhere in McNear's league.
With Barney, Gomer and now Floyd gone, this season seven closing episode really marked the beginning of the end for Mayberry.

    Goober versus Floyd! hide show

This is a very good episode, where we get to see Floyd (in his last appearance) be the wonderfully ornery, angry and verbose character he has always been. In the end, though, Floyd is the tender heart he has always been too. Goober's dismay at the mistake made by the printer is very funny to see. Aunt Bee's delight at winning 5.00 dollars is a scene not to be missed! It's a treat to see Rob Reiner in a very small role as the printer's assistant. We were all young once!

  • In the scene where Floyd visits Walley's filling station but only wants air and water, though we only see his back it's clear that a stand-in actor was used to actually drive the car away. Howard McNear's health had deteriorated considerably at this point, evident by his almost complete lack of mobility and slurred speech throughout this episode. McNear would pass away 18 months later from complications of the stroke he suffered four years earlier. []
  • This marks Howard McNears final episode as Floyd the Barber. []
