Andrew Warhola was born on 6 August 1928 in Forest City, Pennsylvania, USA to Ruthenian immigrants, Ondrej and Julia Zavacky Warhola. He graduated from Schenley High School in Pittsburgh in 1945, and attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology until his graduation June 1949.
He then moved to New York City, where he began drawing pictures for advertisements in various magazines including Harper's Bazzar and Vogue.
In 1952, his first solo exhibition was held at Hugo Gallery, New York and in 1957 he receives the 36th Annual Art Directors Club Medal and Award of Distinctive Merit.
In 1960, he began to make his first paintings. They were based on comic books and soft drink bottles. He started directing films in 1963. After making his first film with his assistant, he travelled to Los Angeles for his second exhibition at the Ferus Gallery. In April 1964 he received an Independent Film Award from Film Culture magazine.
In August 1967, he gives lectures at various colleges in the Los Angeles area. On June 3, 1968, he is shot by Valerie Solanis, the founder of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) and a member of Warhol's entourage. Warhol survived after spending two months in hospital.
Throughtout the 1970's and 80's, Warhol was seen as a major pop culture figure, as he attended many parties and provided patronage to younger artists.
