So, do you think season five was a mistake? Do you think Joss Whedon went down a road that shouldn't have been taken?

    Season 5 is... well, strange.

Take disk number 4 from the DVD edition, for example. It has episodes 12, 13, 14 and 15 from season 5 and they are exactly the best, the worst, the funniest and the saddest one in that order. The whole season was like that. There were some amazing episodes and there were some awful ones as well.

So... Even though I love "You're Welcome" and "Never Fade Away", they are the best episodes of the whole show, I would have been happier if the show had ended after season 4.

Why We Fight wasn't ace. Smile Time was ace. WWF would be a grinding par. Some parts were good, some parts were bad, but it ended up pretty good.

It's a great season but it isn't my favourite. I prefer Seasons 2-4. I like big arcs in my shows and S5 sort of reverted to standalone a lot, which I don't like. It has some of the best episodes of the entire series (You're Welcome, A Hole In The World, Shells and Not Fade Away) but has some pretty hideous episodes as well (TCTONC and Why We Fight are both bottom 5 for me).

I like S5 but it's definitely in my bottom 4 Buffyverse seasons.

I actually liked Season 5 except for Cordy not being a main character in the season i think they couldve came up with some good storylines for her.Like her and Angel could have talked to each other about Conner and went more in depth of what could have happened that night they were going to meet. And there couldve been some storylines with her and Harmony and Cordy,Spike, and Eve getting along IMO.The only bad episodes for me was TCTONC and The Life of the Party(i think the episode was called.

I liked season 5. I thought it did take a while to get going but overall definitely not one of the worst out of the verse.

The move to Wolfram and Hart was ace...it brought a new energy to the show, we finally got a change from the hotel and the move allowed each of the characters to evolve even more. There was less Connor *thank god* more Fred/Wes *er thanks again* less Cordy which I was actually ok with. Her character was done with IMO since we had seen her go from ditzy selfish teen to a champion of the people...and i couldnt really see a purpose for her within season 5. You're Welcome was just a perfect episode for her return and demise since she came in when Angel is at his lowest...she reminds them of what is important, what they stand for and that all battles have casualties.

The only real bad episodes which I cant stand is TCTONC and Why We Fight, Although WWF had its purpose, it may not have been the most amazing episode in comparison to others but it had its place.

You know what...actually getting me thinking about this season is making me love it even more. so many great episodes, characters, twists, and more.

Finally...I loved S5 because of Wesley! His character just breaks my heart...i mean we watch him evolve over 5/6 years...we see his deep love for fred yet he never quite gets her...until s5 when she is cruelly taken away! And it isn't just the Fred/Wes drama i love...the whole episode with his father was awesome because we get to see wes and his insecurities come to light, I jus love wes.

Ilona Costa Bianchi. The Prince of Lies. Ninja cyborgs. "You're Welcome." Illyria. Gummibear Connor. Nina. Lindsey. "A Hole in the World." Dana. Andrew. That sassy psychic in "Hell Bound." Harmony. "Not Fade Away." Lawyer Gunn. PUPPETS. Sahjahn. Cyvus Vail. Crazy Wesley. Pavayne. Hamilton. The Circle of the Black Thorn. Even Spike, occasionally.

How on earth could all of that wonderfulness be a mistake?

No arc. No regular Cordy. Minimal Darla. Overused Spike. Standalone. TCTONC.

I'm biased. I'll forever love Season 2 the best.

I wouldn't say S5 was a mistake though. The second half was amazing.

To be fair, "No arc" and "standalone" are the same objection, and directly attributable to the WB. That was the framework Joss and Co. was given to work in, and they retconned an encompassing arc in "Power Play," so ...

True. The WB are idiots. They cancelled Buffy before it's time and then Angel. Luckily Buffy was picked up by UPN. Angel wasn't as fortunate

I think Illyria is the reason S5 gets so interesting at the end though. For me, Fred's death saved the season from complete mediocrity.

    iyo.

Plenty of fans dislike it and I prefer the middle seasons myself. The first half of S5 is very dull for me.

Actually, in my opinion you have to be extraordinary polite to describe the first half of season 5 with the term "very dull". That's really one of the nicest things a person could possible say about episodes like Conviction, Life Of The Party, The Cautionary Tale Of Numero Cinco, Harm's Way and Soul Purpose.

    No. I. Didn't.

And "Conviction" and "Life of the Party" and "Harm's Way" and "Soul Purpose" kicked ass, along with "Lineage" and "Damage."
