For over two centuries, Angelus was one of the most vicious vampires ever to walk the earth. Then he killed the wrong girl, and her grieving Gypsy family cursed him with the return of his soul, causing him to suffer remorse for all the hundreds of innocents that he had killed through the years. Now he goes by the name Angel, and he fights to protect the helpless from those who would prey upon them as he once did himself.

After three years of living in Sunnydale, fighting alongside his girlfriend Buffy, Angel has moved to Los Angeles to continue the good fight.   With my thanks to Boo who allowed me to adapt his/her review format used in the Buffy rewatch and Keith Topping's excellent fan books Slayer and Hollywood Vampire for inspiration; City of Angels The Good; Impressive opening scenes, funny yet moving. Love Angel choosing the wrong car and very suprising that he doesn't save the girl, at least not the guest star (they use the same time difference trick as they did in Helpless to convince you he will). Especially loved him killing Winters at the end, real vicious stick it in and break it off revenge, great stunt, great effect. Cordy realising that Winter's is a vamp and him initally denying it is also fun. The Bad; If Winters had all this security at his house how can Angel just walk into his office? Best line: Angel; Can you fly? Jeez, how did they get away with that? Winters killing the heroine is very brutal. Also the whole sugardaddy/casting couch scenario shows the stark reality behind the Hollywood glamour. Apocalypses: 4 Angel Cliches Damsel in distress; 1 Inverting the Hollywood cliche; Doyle rams the gates of the Winter's mansion but they seem suprisingly resilient. Also Angel fails to save the girl. In disguise; Angel does his rube in the big city act for the first time DB get's his shirt off; in order to allow Doyle and Cordy to remove the bullets. Yeah, right! Fang Gang in bondage: no but he knocks out and ties up the guard at the mansion Cordy: 5 Angel: 4 Wes: 1 Fang gang knocked out: no but Angel knocks out about 4 guys Cordy: 6 Angel: 6 Wes: 1 Kills: Cordy: none this ep. 3 vamps, ½ a demon from her time in Sunnydale Angel: kills 4 vamps in the opening episode which is remarkable as according to Boo's figures he only killed 3 in the whole 3 seasons of Buffy. So that gives Angel 7 vamps, 1 demon, 1 human. Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 1 Angel: 1 Alternate Fang Gang: Cordy: 1 Angel: 3 Characters killed: 2; Tina and her missing friend Denise (offscreen) Total number of Angel Investigations: 3, Angel, Doyle and Cordy Angel Investigations shot: Angel: 4, pumped full of lead by Winter's bodyguards Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 1? Angel: 1;Buffy Kinky dinky: Tina appears to be Winter's kept woman. She describes him as 'liking pain' (his own or other peoples?). Cordy also considers him for a sugardaddy much the same as she'll consider doing later to David Nabbit. Tina offers herself to Angel as a reward for saving her but like the white knight he is he gently turns her down. Captain Subtext; Oliver at the party considers Angel a 'beautiful man' but only on a professional basis, he's currently in a long term relationship with a landscape gardener. 'Drunk' Angel also gives the appearance of hitting on the guy in the bar. Questions and observations; Doyle drinks Colt .45 beer, the equivalent of Tennants Extra in the UK, pretty much in keeping with the down at heel nature of his character. First appearance of Lindsey, he and Angel are the only characters who appear in both the first and last eps of the series. Angel goes all Punisher finding his way to Winters, not hesitating to beat and threaten his way to his goal. The series already appearing much darker and more adult than Buffy. Angel's narration is similar to Angelus' in Passion and Whistler's in Becoming. It's also reminiscent of the noir crime fiction set in LA, could easily be the The Black Dahalia or LA Confidential or Chinatown. When I first saw this I wasn't sure if Winters was a vamp or not, the vamp makeup is subtly different but will eventually fall back into resembling that on Buffy once more. Angel was in Montanna during the depression, maybe Spike's line about vampire cowboy wasn't too far off the mark? Angel tells Cordy there's no cure for vamparism but we'll actually find 3 in the first season alone. Cordy refers to Angel having never developed an investment portfolio but he must get money from somewhere, he seems very well to do. The money he and Darla stole from their victims or does he just have loads of bank accounts with 200 years of interest to collect, much like Highlander Angel shows some knowledge of explosives which he'll also use in Dad but according to the dialogue he's seen 14 wars and Vietnam in his time. Nice crossover when he phones Buffy in Sunnydale. Marks out of 5; 6/10 good beginning but not compared to the heights Angel will eventually soar to. less «

  This is my opinion I understand if you don't agree! Buffy was a really original show it was funny,dark and also had a great cast and ofcourse amazing creator for me buffy season 2-7 were perfect TV.I loved it so about season 5 of Buffy I decided to check out Angel season 1 was really good and I loved Cordelia and how they made her very likeable more than they did in Buffy.Also you really like Angel on his own in Buffy you needed him with Buffy to be interesting (Unless he was evil) and they made Wesley cool.But season 2 was annoying I loved to see Darla and Dru back but I felt that Angel going to the dark side was boring and also it was a little too dark.Then season 3 was ok Connor was very interesting and Fred was so loveable.Then season 4 I couldn't even watch!Connor and Cordy!WHA?Then they make her evil and kill her off and wrap it all up in one episode in the horrible finale that I watched a day after the series finale of Buffy and it really dissapointed me.So when Buffy got canned I was heartbroken but I was interested to see that Angel got renewed.So I watched season 5 and it was really awsome and was like Buffy and the dynamic between Angel and Spike was great and when they made Fred evil they didn't kill her off instead made the amazing Illyria.This series was very dark but it was still good.   Angel is one of those shows that you wished never ended, although you know it had to. hide « show »

  I really like watching this show. Especially after the second season. It was a little rough in the earlier seasons as the show had to find it's way. But after developing a full cast of characters by bringing back some old and creating new, Angel really had a full head of steam until it's end. I can say that I still watch the reruns on TNT, even though I may have just seen it from beginning to end a few months ago. It is just one of those shows that touches different genres; comedy, drama, action. The season finale left me so sad and wondering what happened. It wasn't until years later that I found out they continued the story in the form of a comic book. And being a comic book fan, I found that I can now reinvest my attention to the series...anytime I like. I think my favorite characters are Wesley (Dark-Wesley), Illyria, and Spike. I was really happy at how they created that love affair between Fred and Wesley and how tragic their lives ended up. Wesley losing his love, and then all hope...to end up killed in the final episode. Just good story writing. Reminds me of the greet tragedy.

  Angel the Vampire with soul, after helping Buffy defeat the Mayor at the end of it's Third Season Angel left Sunnydale. He then moves to L.A.where he attempts to atone for his crimes. hide « show »

  I personally think that Angel is better than Buffy the Vampire Slayer but that's my personal opinion. I really liked the metaphor that Lawyers are evil, throught the series Angel has numerous Story archs most are good (Darla, Pylea, Holtz.) but there were some bad ones such as the infamous Jasmine story arch. The characters in Angel are great and well written, the episodes are great, and the acting is good. The plots always have a twist whether for good or for bad their always good, I really wished they would of made a Sixth Season, but I would completely recommend this series to anyone.

  A fantastic, action packed show, but never truly steady. hide « show »

  Overall Angel is a great show. Lots of action, drama and icky monsters. It continually chose the perfect actors to play their roles and it worked in a way Buffy never could as a show to be taken seriously.
  
  However I do feel the main problem with Angel is that just like Angel, it goes bad sometimes. While I really loved season one, the entire season two felt like a giant slump where it seemed they weren't sure what to do with the show. Season three picked up again and Angel started to get great. Continuing into season four, the show went back to season two ground where it seemed they weren't sure what they were doing and snded up making season four just plai ridiculous by the end. Then came season 5, and Angel became great again and ended on a fantastic high note.
  
  So while Angel was a great show, I really felt it slumped form lack of general direction in the 2nd and 4th seasons.

  A spin off of the popular Buffy the Vampire series. Angel was the love interest of Buffy. Angel is cursed to still have his soul and conscious so he is trying to repent for what he feels his evil actions have been over the centuries. hide « show »

  A wonderful series that ended early as it was cursed to be on that network formerly known as the WB. Next to FOX I think the WB was the network that mismanaged their network schedule even worse. In their final year their ratings actually dropped below UPN (which they merged with to become the CW) and even Univision.
  
  Angel was the story of Angelus a vampire that was cursed and had his soul returned to him making it very difficult to live the existence a generally evil vampire would live. So after breaking off from Buffy he moves to Los Angeles to start his own detective agency to help the less fortunate from those things they can't protect themselves against.
  
  The cast of Angel was wonderful. David Boreanaz who plays Booth on Bones was Angel. Boreanaz has become one of the most popular actors on TV today. Charisma Carpenter played Cordelia Chase a character first introduced as a shallow money chaser in Buffy, she really becomes everything Angel needs as a confidant and more. The rest of the cast Alexis Denisof (Wesley) J. August Richards (Charles Gunn), Amy Acker (Fred) and Andy Hallett all were superb in their roles. Acker can be seen in the current Whedon show The Dollhouse and unfortunately Andy Hallett passed away this past year at an early age.
  
  A special cameo and cast member for the final year was James Master (Spike) from Buffy who really sort of replace Angel in that series after his own started. We could have seen a few more years of these two running around LA doing good deeds and sometimes causing mayhem.
  
  My only complaint about the show was the disappearance of Cordelia in a convoluted story line as Carpenter was rumored to be having problems with the producers of the show and her contract. The rumors is Whedon fired her when she got pregnant and that she wanted to spend more time with her baby. They wrote around that in season 4. They very easily could have brought her back mid-season 5. I do believe she was missed in the final fifth season. The dynamics between Cordelia and Angel were what really drove this show for me. She was the reason for Angel to be Angel.
  
  A great show probably too expensive for the WB to keep producing. There were rumors at the time of a move to another network or to syndication but very rarely does that work out. (Reaper this year!)
  
  All five years are available on DVD individually or in a complete set. I would recommend picking up this well done entertaining series you can watch over and over again. Thanks for reading...

  I actually stumbled across this program being the nightowl I am. I caught the entire series via repeats on TNT network. Initially I thought the program was ridiculous. However, I soon found myself almost addicted and looking forward to the next show. The characters are well-developed and you cbecome highly invested in subplots such as Wesley's unrequited love for Fred; or Cordelia's demon pregnancy and death. While the program is suspenseful, it is also comedic fantasy. In my opinion that Angel is far superior to the Buffy series. On occasion there is a "real stretch" of plot and leaps from one phase of storyline to another, but that is why they call it fiction!!
