I once saw an animated film/show on TV that scared me so much as a child that it has haunted me my entire life. I'm now 30 years old and need some resolution. However, even after many many hours of researchI can't seem to find any information on it. This animated show/movie was probably on TV around 1987. The following is all I can recall of the plot (you'll need to forgive me if it's wrong - I was probably 7 years old):
There was a young boy who had a nice family, but was corrupted by an evil creature. The boy became the creature's apprentice and eventually grew into a powerful magician (I'm thinking he had blonde hair). Once an adult, he visited his family again, but the meeting went horribly wrong and he ended up getting angry and turning his family into wood. In fact, for reasons I can't quite remember, he ended up turned the entire village into wooden statues. I seem to remember seeing thousands of wooden statues being moved about in an assembly line fashion. I also seem to recall either his mother or his sister being the only statue among the thousands to have a flower on its head. I can't remember the ending, although I'm suspecting that the apprentice had a change in heart and destroyed his master and turned the village and his family back into people.
I suspected that the story was from "Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics", which seemed to be on around the right time period and featured many legends in the form of animated episodes. I can recall watching "The World of David the Gnome" and other shows on during that time period. However, I think I've looked through the summary of each episode of "Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics"and none seemed to even remotely match. Perhaps I'm mixing stories ... sigh ...
Anyway, I'm desperate for leads if anyone can help me.
