Personally I loved Last Exile, GunGrave and Trigun. I prefer animes with a set story/scope in mind that realize it through the set episodes. Anything more than 40 episodes looses my interest. I am not saying that Naruto isn't good, but its not my cup of tea. Last Exile was fresh and intriguing. Gungrave brought up some pretty hefty ideas and commentary. And Trigun went from a comedic romp to a very serious action drama.

personally im sort of sick of most animes that just stop after 30 eps, never to be seen again. im glad bleach is at ep 77 and promises more soon. dont get me wrong, i think its great with set storylines for the entire series, but when done correctly, its possible for a anime to lead into different storys. so far bleach has done it all right, switched storys and recycled charcaters realli well, unlike DBZ (after frieza saga)

The problem is that it only ever is good when it's done correctly. If a show goes on when it's clearly past its use-by date, usually it's just crap. A long-running show needs to be done well, and usually it's rather poor form to have it in such a way that if you miss just one episode you're lost (which is the case for many shorter series). After all, people in Japan usually have to watch it on TV, and it's easy for them to miss an episode compared to watching it on DVD or downloading it like many people seem to do.

It's good that a show is able to keep going for a long time without a loss of quality. But for shows that we look back on favourably, the writers normally did know when to stop rather than just beating out series after series like in DBZ. It takes a good writer to keep thinking up new ideas for what to put into the show, or else it would just get tired and repetitive. If they're able to do that, good on them, because they can keep the show going. But enough is enough, and if they don't have any good ideas for how to keep the show going, maybe it would be better to end it and make a fresh start with a new show, story, characters etc.

    well put. my feelings exactly.

kinda like the reason that seinfeld is now still as popular now as re-runs, because jerry turned down doing a next season because he didnt want to milk it for all its worth. whih was a very smart decision, instead of the $2 mil contract he turned down, he now earns much more from DVD sales and re-runs. i think ive pasted the point, lol.

anywho, if its done right, there allowed to do so

The only anime that I believe has kept my attention for 300+ episodes was Detective Conan. And that's because the characters continued to be interesting as the mysteries. Honestly, the mysteries are brilliant.

Naruto is a good anime and I like it. I wouldn't say the best anime, but its definitly a whole lot better than DBZ(which, like others have said, stopped being good at the frieza saga)

    However, my favorites are
    1: Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi
    2: Fullmetal Alchemist
    3: Last Exile
    4: Naruto
    5: Cowboy Bebop
    6: Trigun
    7: .Hack Sign

There are a  lot of things that I like about Evangelion, but the direction that they took in the later episodes, and then, especially, in the movies, was not one that I appreciated.

I agree. I don't mind dark animes, but Evangelion was just way too dark and angsty later on. While it did get much better later on, I just didn't like how it got too dark.

I would have to say it's a tie between Macross, and Akira. They were among the first Anime to crossover, and it can be said about both of them that the popularity of Anime in America started with them. Another influential anime was Mobil Suit Gundam. This was the series that basically made Mecha Anime popular.
