Anton Diffring was born on 20th October, 1918, in Koblenz, Germany. After completing his education and studying drama in Berlin and Vienna he left to start his film career in America, but en-route in Canada World War II was declared, and he was interned there for the duration of the war. After the war he continued to the USA, where he made several stage appearances. In the fifties he travelled to England, where he soon found work in British film studios, in such films as Highly Dangerous with Margaret Lockwood and I Am A Camera, the non-musical version of Cabaret starring Shelley Winters. The role of the Commandant in The Colditz Story and an army officer in Reach For the Sky, the story of brave pilot Douglas Bader starring Kenneth More, were the beginnings of his filmed war career. After this, starring roles in The Man Who Could Cheat Death and Circus of Horrors established him as a cold-hearted villain. Many roles in war films followed, including Where Eagles Dare, with Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton and the role Reinhard Heydrich in Operation Daybreak. Many film and television roles followed, in both England and Europe, right up until his death in May 1989. There is no other actor who has brought screen villainy to life with such grace, elegance and panache. Anton Diffring was born on 20th October, 1918, in Koblenz, Germany.
