Arthur of the Britons was a drama series which aimed to throw light on the Dark Ages in Britain - an age in which Romanized Britons might have been led against invading Angles and Saxons by a Celtic warlord we now call King Arthur. Oliver Tobias gives us a virile and thoughtful Arthur, beset by problems at home and abroad, while Kai, his right hand man, was played by the late Michael Gothard. They are supported by a strong crew working on a limited budget, but in impressive locations.

The series was last repeated in the UK in 1983, but at least one video tape of the production is still available - a ninety-minute compilation first issued in 1975 under the title 'King Arthur: Young Warlord'.

  A U.K. drama series about fifth-century Britain, aiming to throw some light on the beginnings of England. hide « show »

  Although low-budget, this was a great series, perhaps even a bit of a minor cult, at the time. It was well cast (even to the point of bringing in a German actress to play Rowena the Jute) and beautifully acted. Alas, 'Arthur of the Britons' has not been repeated on U.K. television since the 1970s. I kept the guide short, as memory can be a bit unreliable.
  
  One video compilation was issued and is still about - you can occasionally find it on eBay - but other than that there has never been a complete issue on video or DVD.
  
  With all the old drama now surfacing on some of the new television channels, 'Arthur of the Britons' should definitely be taken down off a dusty shelf somewhere and given another outing.
