High School Musical 2 beats up, punks, bullies previous cable ratings records; 17.2 million viewers are highest ever for cable.

Every single kid on Earth watched Disney's High School Musical 2 last Friday. Well, almost.

Note to tweens: Acting like this in a real high school may get your ass kicked.

The Disney Channel had no problems touting the ratings for the second film in the gargantuan youth-oriented franchise late Monday, offering a wealth of statistics in a statement.

The broadcast logged 17.2 million viewers, making it the highest-rated cable telecast ever, according to statistics from Nielsen Media Research. Broken down by demographics, the made-for-television movie is now on record as the "most-watched TV telecast" by kids ages 6-11 and the number one "entertainment telecast of all time" (excludes events such as the Super Bowl and other sporting events) for kids age 9-14. The original Disney's High School Musical, which aired in January 2006, netted 7.7 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

Disney also claims two-thirds of the TV-watching portion of the aforementioned age groups tuned in, besting other record-setting shows like Survivor and American Idol.

Note to tweens: Real high school far less attractive, fun; more depressing, soul-crushing.

The record-setting broadcast helped give Disney an easy ratings win on Friday, which also saw the cable network show a sneak preview of Phineas and Ferb and an all-new Hannah Montana. The kid's channel even dominated major networks, tripling the ratings of its nearest competitor (CBS).

With an average of 14 million viewers on Friday, Disney had the largest primetime audience for a summer night ever, excluding sports and Olympics broadcasts.

In response to tv_addict10's comment, Nickelodeon has never really done as well as Disney Channel. At least in the past few years it hasn't.

i knew the ratings would be HUGE..good for disney channel, hopefully they can completey de-throne nick for the #1 spot as its a horrible channel these days. also there is already another high school musical movie coming out in theatres in 2008, it was announced in february.

Yes, they are officially making a third movie. But it is going to be for theatres, not tv.
Posted 08/22/2007 11:56am
yeah right: you don't think there will be a third high school musical?? well I can tell you that number three is allready in production (they'd be crazy not to make a 3th one with those numbers)

im not surprised hsm2 was so popular.
even if it was the worst movie of all time, which i dont think it really was, it still would have had ratings like that.
disney channel is doing great!

I was shocked at the number of kids in my neighbourhood that were having HSM2 parties and making like it was the broadcast event of the century. I thought the movie was good at best - I don't think there will be a HSM3 - they'd have to be in college. I am looking forward to watching the Flight 29 Down movie this Saturday.

In about 10 years when those kids are adults and watching these movies again they'll be saying "What the hell was I thinking?".lol
Posted 08/22/2007 3:15am
Disney is on top of the world now. Nick will stay on top in the long run though.
Posted 08/21/2007 9:46pm
that is crazy. I expect High School Musical 3 for that.
