1. "ATOMIC BETTY" IS coming back, but...... | 08/14/2006 2:26pm

I received this message from Trevor Bentley, one of the "architects" of "ATOMIC BETTY" (and co-founder of Atomic Cartoons, her studio) almost two weeks ago [but didn't realize it until today!]. I don't know how he knew I was wondering what had happened to Betty here in the United States, but this is what he wrote to me:

Hi "outoffog",

Betty won't be back on CNUSA, if you hadn't guessed. We will be making a season 3 though and it will have a new kick-ass direction.

Thanks for your kind words.

Trevor

Well, that's it. Unless Kevin Gillis can broker a new deal with another cable channel (or equivalent)...."Atomic Betty" won't be seen in the U.S. for a long time.

Sorry I had to break the bad news to you..........

Looks like there's only two options left:

Either we wait and see where Betty pops up next...

...Or talk someone who has episodes of the show downloaded on their computer into uploading them onto youtube.com.

But anyway, I'm surprised that Cartoon Network took the show off the air after one whole year. I thought it was pretty good...at least by my standards. But hey, at least we'll have some great memories...And besides, we'll be ready for wherever she pops up next. All we gotta do is just keep hoping for a miracle.

This really stinks. Here's to hoping they'll come out with DVDs, because even if they're in Canada, at least people in the US can watch them!

Plus, I'll probably lose my editorship to someone who watches it in Canada. Blargh....

'terra', if Cartoon Network isn't interested in showing "ATOMIC BETTY" here in the U.S., what makes you think Warner Home Video would be interested in releasing future DVD volumes of the show, IF IT ISN'T SEEN REGULARLY ON TV HERE???? No, what WHV wants are shows they can promote and release that kids already see on TV (especially CN)- "corporate synergy", since BOTH are owned by Time-Warner. Try and find the first two "Betty" volumes these days.......it's almost imposible. They've just "given up" on her over here. I feel your frustration over this whole thing, believe me.....

It is really great to see the continued support for the show! Hang in there everyone - with Season 3 in the works and the multi-platforming plans that are also pending (Google 'Atomic Betty multi-platform'), I have a really good feeling 'Betty' will make its way back on the US airways somehow!!

You're right, 'Tajoniko'- I'm pretty sure, with some help from Breakthrough Films and support from loyal fans here in the U.S., "Betty" will return!! In the meantime, weren't you going to say something about Tajja Isen's OTHER projects- "JANE AND THE DRAGON", now on NBC's Saturday morning schedule? And "FRANNY'S FEET", now a part of PBS' weekend schdule as well?

Great to hear that 'Jane' is airing in the US! (and Saturday morning - pretty good!). 'Jane' and 'Betty' will compete next month as two of the nominees for a 'Gemini Award' (like the 'Emmy's' for Canada). As for 'Franny's', I heard that Tajja sang for three animated music video's recently for PBS - have you seen them?

I haven't see Tajja's music videos for PBS  yet, 'Tajoniko', but I'll keep an eye out for them when they're broadcast! As for the "Gemini Awards" (I've heard of them), I have a strong feeling "JANE" will win that award over "BETTY", for no matter how many times that's been nomiated in ANY major animation category, it NEVER seems to win the "big" awards.

Oh, yes- Tajja also did some work on "TIME WARP TRIO" for the Discovery Kids channel. NBC was showing her episodes right up until they dropped their "Discovery Kids" Saturday morning line-up a few weeks ago. Now, with the new "Nelvana" block of shows, "JANE" has just about taken its place!

What I plan to do is introduce a new character to the show. His name will be Neil Shikari (named after me) and his presence in the show will not only strengthen the romantic aspect of "Atomic Betty", but push Betty's skills to a higher level than ever before. However, I will need to meet with one of the heads of Atomic Cartoons and convince them that it is a good idea.

This sounds like a good idea, 'neil'. But I believe Atomic Cartoons have already "mapped out" the character relationships for season three, and I'm not sure if there's room for a "Neil" at Moose Jaw Heights Junior High.

If you're thinking along the lines of "Neil" being a buffer between Noah and Dylan for Betty's affections, that's interesting. But, suppose Betty doesn't have any interest in "Neil" (at first?). Would he tag along and eventually find out her secret about being a Galactic Guardian? How would he react? Would she take him into her confidence?Would he run into interference from Duncan Payne? These are things you must figure out before you can propose such an idea to Atomic. I wish you the best of luck in doing so!

Actually, I made the story in the sense that Neil is 15 and Betty is 13.

In the year 2001, a 15-year-old Neil is orphaned by an invasion of the company his family works for and lives in. He is on an escpae pod for GG HQ, but he gets knocked off coast and cryogenically frozen for 5 years 5 years later, Betty saves Neil from floating into a star and he is revived, still 15 years old. A monster living within Neil almost kills Betty, but Neil fights it back and almost dies saving a battered Betty from a 6 storey fall, convincing Admiral DeGill to recruit him. Then,in a near-hopeless battle, Neil plants a kiss on Betty that eventually results in both of them escaping it alive. It starts off a relationship between the two. He only gets to see Betty in space since he lives with a foster family in Vancouver and attends a full-fledged high-school, not Moose Jaw Heights Junior High.

While Betty is more or less reliant on quickness, Neil mostly puts his strength to use. The two can fight battles together in a coordinated yet dynamic style. Neil doesn't know who else is vying for Betty's affection and he virtually doesn't meet any people from Betty's life; he only hears about them from Betty. Also, if you thought the plot twist about Betty's grandma was amazing, or the plot twist involving Auntie Matter, I have a blockbuster of a plot twist that involves Paloma and Neil.

I'd like him to last at least two seasons, be killed off at the end, and make rare appearances as a spirit.

Right now, I'm giving away too much info, so I'll end it here until I can consult with Rob Davies or Paddy Gillen or somebody from Atomic Cartoons...

Could someone call Atomic Cartoons at 604-734-2866, ask for the time and place of Cartoonapalooza 7 and get back to me? Thanks!

I pretty much doubt that another network will pick "Betty" up, don't count on it returning to the U.S, gang.

If Tajja Isen's other series, "JANE AND THE DRAGON" and "FRANNY'S FEET", can appear on American TV a while after they were introduced in other countries, then there's always the chance "ATOMIC BETTY" may yet return! I'm sure Kevin Gillis of Breakthrough Films is trying to negotiate a new deal with another U.S. outlet, and 'Tajoniko' says another deal may be imminent (sic)......we'll have to wait and see, 'sonic'...............

Why are you so special? Why'd you get that email? And why'd he use your tv.com username? This seems very fake.

Not_grape, I'm sure he found the email and emailed them signing it with his tv.com name.

Dont' give up hope guys, I know other shows that were dropped from Networks, going strong in Canada and picked back up!

I assure you that the message I received from Trevor Bentley was indeed legitimate. For purposes of sharing that e-mail with all of you, I used my "outoffog" moniker to disguise my real name. Mr. Bentley was kind enough to reply from a mesaage I left on a forum at Animation World Magazine.com a while ago. That's how I knew Cartoon Network would not be carrying "Betty" for another season. I've tried to reach Kevin Gillis at Breakthrough Films (the series' production partner), with no success.

That is true- Canada can be so fickle that they may like(love) what we cancel on T.V. I bet a bunch of bad shows here, especially cartoons Ex. this show, the Buzz on Maggie are going strong there... Need I firetruckin' remind you though- this is what we are saying in America, seeing as this show sucks, and we think the guy who sent us this is lying: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

As for the last message I wrote- Don't get it twisted like I hate this show- I am actually a fan of some mediocre T.V. that's still out there- it gives me reasons to wake up so early...

Otherwise, I don't need people saying I'm part of the problem with T.V. today and pointing guns at me- I'm all for saving the media from itself... Otherwise, there's a limit to what we all  like- the solution: get outside. There's air to breathe!!
