(edit) Even though Sokka hates the Fire Nation he stopped Jet from killing an old man because of his instincts tells him that its wrong to kill the innocent. (edit) This episode was mostly based on Sokka. (edit) The old man Jet was going to kill but Sokka saved him in-turn helped Sokka by convincing the townspeople to trust his story about Jet. (edit) Sokka uses his instincts to save the town from Jet's destructive waves. (edit) Katara is able to freeze water with her breath. (edit) After Katara sees Jet for his true self, she does not like what she sees for his "monster" actions. (edit) Katara and Aang don't know about Sokka's and Suki's first kiss. Sokka: (to Jet) Wait! False alarm...he's just an old man.
(Jet jumps from a tree and lands in front of the old man)
Jet: (to the old man) What are you doing in our woods, you leech.
Old Man: Please, sir. I'm just a traveler.
Jet: Do you like destroying towns? Do you like destroying families? Do you!?
Old Man: Oh...please let me go! Have mercy...!
Jet: Does the Fire Nation let people go!? Does the Fire Nation have mercy!?
Sokka: Jet, he's just an old man!
Jet: He's Fire Nation! Search him!
Sokka: But he's not hurting anyone!
Jet: Have you forgotten that the Fire Nation killed your mother? Remember why you fight!
Smellerbee: We've got his stuff, Jet.
Sokka: This doesn't feel right.
Jet: It's what has to be done. Now let's get outta here. (edit) Jet: Sokka, you fool! We could free this valley!
Sokka: Who will be free? Everyone will be dead.
Jet (Angrily): You traitor!
Sokka: No, Jet, you became the traitor when you stopped protecting innocent people. (edit) Aang (after having glider stolen by Jet): I won't fight you!
Jet: You'll have to if you want your glider back! (edit) Katara: Who made you the boss?
Sokka: I'm not the boss. I'm the leader.
(edit) Katara: I've never used my bending in water I can't see. (edit) Jet: Sokka, you're kidding me! I needed you on an important mission tomorrow.
Sokka: What mission? (edit) Katara: Why Jet? I can't believe I trusted you! You lied to me. You're sick and I trusted you! (edit) Katara: Jet, I'm sorry about how Sokka's been acting.
Jet: No worries, he already apologized.
Aang (with a look of disbelief on his face): Really? Sokka apologized?
Jet: Yeah, I was surprised too. I got the sense that maybe you talked to him or something.
Katara: Yea, I did. (edit) Katara: Hey Jet, nice speech.
Jet: Thanks, by the way I was really impressed with you and Aang. That was some great bending I saw out there today.
Katara: Well, he's great, he's the Avatar. (blushes) I could use some more training. (edit) Fire Nation solider: They're in the trees! (a freedom fighter then falls from the trees onto the Fire Nation soldiers head and laughs) (edit) Jet: Aang?
Aang: I'll get up on my own.
Jet: Grab hold of me Katara. (edit) Katara: Um... thanks for saving us Jet. We're lucky you were there.
Jet: I should be thanking you. We were waiting to ambush those soldiers all morning. We just needed the right distraction, and then you guys just stumbled in.
Katara (Scoffing): We were relying on instinct.
Jet: You'll get yourself killed doing that. (Sokka listens in and with an angry face he walks away) (edit) Sokka: Look, my instincts tell me we have a better chance of slipping through on foot. And a leader has to trust his instincts.
Katara: Ok, we'll try it your way, O Wise Leader.
Aang: Who knows, walking might be fun!
(After traveling for a long period of time)
Aang: Walking stinks! How do people go anywhere without a flying bison?
Katara: I don't know, Aang. Why don't you ask Sokka's instincts? They seem to know everything.
Sokka: Haha, very funny.
Aang: I'm tired of carrying this pack.
Katara: You know who you should ask to carry it for a while? Sokka's instincts.
Aang: That's a great idea. Hey, Sokka's instincts! Would you mind --
Sokka: Okay, okay. I get it. (edit) Pipsqueak: You think my name is funny?
Aang: It’s hilarious.
(Aang and Pipsqueak start to laugh; Pipsqueak slaps Aang on the back)
(edit) Sokka: These are fire nation traps. You can tell from the metal work. We better pack up camp, and get moving.
(Aang, Katara, and Sokka start to pack up camp)
Sokka: Uh, no flying this time.
Aang: What? Why wouldn’t we fly?
Sokka: Think about it. Somehow Prince Zuko and the fire nation keep finding us. It’s because they spot Appa. He’s just too noticeable.
Katara: What, Appa’s not noticeable.
Sokka: He’s a gigantic fluffy monster with an arrow on his head; it’s kind of hard to miss him. (Appa growls)
Aang (to Appa): Sokka's just jealous 'cause he doesn't have an arrow. (edit) Aang: Sokka, look what the Duke gave me!
(Picks out a sparkler, and throws it at Momo; Momo hisses; he then climbs up on Aang's shoulder and takes some sparklers out, and throws them at Aang's feet)
Aang: Ow, hey, quit it! (edit) (Aang jumps to help the hog-monkeys)
Sokka: This is gonna take forever.
(Throws his boomerang cutting the ropes and releasing the hog-monkeys )
Aang: That works. (edit) Aang (to Sokka, as they are flying away on Appa after Sokka saves everyone in the village): We thought you were going to the dam. How come you went to the town instead?
Katara: Let me guess. Your instincts told you?
Sokka: Hey, sometimes they're right.
Aang: Uh Sokka, you know we're going the wrong way, right?
Sokka (turning Appa around): And sometimes they're wrong. (edit) Aang: I think that's enough, and I'm not saying that to be lazy. (edit) Sokka (to a troop of firebenders): If you let us pass, we promise not to hurt you!
Katara (quietly): What are you doing?
Sokka: Bluffing?
Captain: You? Promise not to hurt us?
(An arrow is seen after the Captain falls to the ground)
Aang: Nice work, Sokka! How’d you do that?
Sokka: Uh... instinct? (edit) Katara: You’re the leader?! But you’re voice still cracks.
Sokka: I’m the oldest, and I'm a warrior, (in a deeper voice) so I’m the leader.
Katara: If anybody's the leader, it's Aang. He is the Avatar.
Sokka: Aang? He's just a goofy little kid.
Aang: He's right. (edit) Katara: Why do boys always think someone has to be the leader? I bet you wouldn’t be so bossy if you kissed a girl.
Sokka: I-I’ve kissed a girl-you just haven’t met her.
Katara: Who? Gran-Gran? I’ve met Gran-gran.
Sokka: No—besides Gran-Gran. Look, my instincts tell me we have a better chance of slipping through on foot, and a leader has to trust his instincts.
Katara: Okay, we’ll try it your way O' Wise Leader. (edit) Katara: Jet, you monster! (edit) Katara (with tears in her eyes): Where's Sokka? (edit)

When Smellerbee attempts to catch Sokka after he first runs away, Pipsqueak has lips. (edit) This is the first time we see Katara use her water pouch for bending. (edit) At one part Appa is lying on the top of the trees. The top branches of any tree are newly grown twigs and they shouldn't be able to support a ten-ton bison. (edit) The Freedom Fighter's hideout was in the trees, but what happens during Autumn? All the leaves fall and their hideout would be in plain sight. (edit) When Jet ask Katara to bend the water from underground. She replies "I've never used bending on water I can't see. I don't know."

But in the episode Imprisoned, she bends water from a well. She also bends the water out of Aang's chest in The Warriors of Kyoshi. (edit) When Jet is commenting on Aang and Katara's bending after his speech during dinner, Katara's braid is missing. (edit) Before the commercial when Jet and his gang are talking about blowing up the dam with Sokka listening in it is dark. When the show came back from commercial it was light. (edit) When the gang decides not to fly on Appa, Aang gets tired of carrying his pack and teases that Sokka's instincts should carry it. Even if they weren't flying, couldn't the gang have let Appa carry the supplies in his saddle to ease their walk? (edit) When Katara comes down the ladder after Sokka sees Jet rob the old man, she doesn't have anything in her hands. But then she puts her hands behind her back and pulls out the hat? (edit)

Jet's hideout is very simmilar to Peter Pan's hideout in the 1991 movie Hook. (edit) It is possible that Jet's name was taken from the movie West Side Story because in that movie the gang called the Jets would whistle in order to communicate. Jet does this with his Freedom Fighters as well, and it can be inferred that this is how the name was though of. (edit) The "blasting jelly" that's used to blow up the dam is possible based on the real explosive Gelignite, which is also called Blasting Gelatin.

The series honors the works and influence of Shinichiro Watanabe within this episode. Jet's charisma, close-combat skills, and physical features (especially hairstyle) all resemble that of the fictional bounty hunter Spike Spiegal, the main protagonist of the anime/manga series Cowboy Bebop. Jet also shares the name of the series secondary protagonist, Jet Black. Futhermore, the animation used during the duel between Jet and Aang draws heir to a typical exceptionally choreographed Wantanbe fight sequence, especially in regards to the anime Samurai Champloo in terms of the use of traditional weaponry. Jet even manages to express some of the mannerisms of Mugen, one of the series three main protagonists, especially in regards to the habit of chewing on a blade of grass. The creators have openly stated that they were heavily inspired by and cherish his work on both anime series. (edit) Jet's weapons are know as the twin tiger head hook swords, very rare and ancient Chinese weapons dating back to the Qing Dynasty. Best used against a spear, the techniques that the hooks can be utilized for include hooking, drawing, hugging, carrying, holding, pressing, piercing, shaping, hanging, pulling, lifting and locking; almost all were demonstrated by Jet in the episode. The swords were most recently seen being used in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. (edit) The duel between Jet and Aang echoed the treetop battles from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. (edit) The idea of Jet and his Freedom Fighters seems like the idea of Peter Pan and the Lost Boys, living where the enemy (Fire Nation/Captian Hook), can't find them and trying to kill all of the enemy. (edit) The Duke could be a jest at one of the character's in Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In the book, the Duke was a con man, while the Freedom Fighters came across while Duke while he was trying to steal their food. (edit) The rebels' treetop town is similar to the 1991 movie Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves where Robin (Kevin Costner) and his 'merry men' build huts and bridges in the trees to defend themselves from the sheriff's men.
