Notes

add »
This episode along with The Western Air Temple, and The Boiling Rock parts 1 and 2 aired outside the U.S and was released to DVD in the U.S before airing in the U.S. (edit)
Character Debut: Sun Warrior Chief (edit)
Creature Debut: Dragons (the source of fire) (edit)
It is revealed that Uncle Iroh knew of the Sun Warrior Tribe's existence. He claimed to have slain the last dragon in order to protect the ones still alive. (edit)
We learn in this episode how the first firebenders learned to control fire. Now we know how all of the original benders mastered their respective elements:

Waterbending- Moon
Earthbending- Badgermoles
Airbending- Sky Bison
Firebending- Dragons

This shows that the Waterbenders are the only benders to not learn from animals. (edit)

Aang: What's happening!
(Aang drops his hands, his fire goes out as he looks at Zuko, and turns back to realize his fire's out)
Aang: (terrified gasp)
Aang: Zuko, my fire went out!
Zuko: What do you want me to do?
Aang: Gimme some of yours!
Zuko: No, just make your own.
Aang: I can't.
Zuko: Get some from one of those warriors, Hurry!... Stop cheating off me!
Aang: Quit being stingy!
(Both struggle over the fire until Aang hits Zuko's arm and his fire goes out too. They both look at each other in horror.)
Aang & Zuko: Uh-oh (edit)
Zuko: Try to relax, firebending in itself is not something to fear.
Aang: (sighs) Not something to fear.
Zuko: But if you don't respect it, it'll chew you up and spit you out like an angry Komodo Rhino!
Aang: Aaahhh! (edit)
(As the goopy green stuff rises, Aang leaps up to the stuck Zuko)
Aang: Uhhh, I can't move! Zuko do something!
Zuko: Me!? I can't move either!
(The goop pushes them into the grate)
Zuko and Aang: Erhhhhh...
Aang: It stopped. (edit)
(After Zuko and Aang preform a dance and a big glowing thing on a pedastal appears)
Aang: Hooray! Wait what exactly is that?
Zuko: It's some kind of mystical gemstone.
(Zuko runs over to it)
Aang: Well don't touch it!
Zuko: Why not?
Aang: Remember what happened out there with those spikes? I'm just very suspicious of giant glowing gems sitting on pedestals. (edit)
Sokka: Yeah that's a great dance you two learned there.
Zuko: Its not a dance, its a firebending form.
Sokka: We'll just tapdance our way to the victory over the firelord.
Zuko: Its a sacred form that happens to be thousands of years old!
Katara: (mockingly) Oh yeah, what's your little form called?
Zuko: (hesitates) The dancing dragon.
(Everyone but Zuko starts laughing) (edit)

Trivia

add »
This is the first time Zuko smiles around Aang. (edit)
Katara's hair appears straight and ratty rather than thick, and extremely wavy as it has before. (edit)
In earlier episodes the red dragon represented Zuko's good side, while the blue dragon represents Zuko's bad side. But in this episode this concept of using the colors of the dragons to portray good and evil seem to ignored, as both Ran and Shao (who are red and blue respectively) have some predispositions toward the good side. (edit)
In the first view of Aang and Zuko accepting the eternal flame, there were three rows of Sun Warriors around them, later it became two rows. (edit)
When Zuko first talked to the gang at the beginning of the episode, Aang's sleeping bag was purple, a moment later it changed to green. (edit)

Allusions

add »
The practice of dragon hunting for glory is very similar to trophy hunting big game like bears, big cats, rhinos etc. Trophy hunting (like dragon hunting) often increases a species' chance of extinction. (edit)
The Sun Warriors' "eternal flame" seems to be a reference to the Olympic Flame. (edit)
The Sun Warriors' city is based on the Maya Civilization with some references to the Aztecs. (edit)
When Zuko runs along the wall to avoid the spikes reminds the way the prince in the videogame Prince of Persia: Sands of Time does. (edit)
When the sun warriors are playing drums it is the same beat that plays during the shows end credits (shown on the DVD, Nicktoons Network and in other countries, not usually shown on Nickelodeon in the US due to advertisements played during them). This is also the music played during Zuko and Zhao's Agni Kai. (edit)
