In Zuko's bedroom, Zuko tosses and turns in his sleep. Unable to find peace with himself (for he was almost sure the Avatar is alive), he heads outside cloaked and hooded to a tower prison. There he is spotted by a guard, Zuko says nothing and silently turns away.
Later, Aang and his friends fly through the air on Appa, who is disguised as a cloud. They approach the shore where there is a cave nearby. Once landed, they decided to blend in with their surroundings and steal Fire Nation attire from a nearby clothesline after they make camp in the cave, something that Sokka is not pleased about. In town, they buy some more accessories while heading to a meat stand for lunch. Aang would rather eat lettuce from the garbage than eat meat and waits for the others outside. Non-chalantly greeting people in fire nation vernacular, he sees guards come forward to claim that Aang was skipping school (he inadvertently stole school uniform from the clothesline). Luckily, they did not notice his Arrow underneath the headband (which is actually the waistband for the school uniform.) Without another word they dragged him away. He is taken to a school and there finds nothing but discipline and strictness. Under pressure, he plays it cool and uses the name Kuzon for cover. (The name of his old friend from the fire nation 100 years ago) After school, a girl named On Ji warns Aang to keep his lemur hidden. Then shortly after conversing, On Ji's boyfriend barges in and makes it clear that he is her boyfriend. In seeing Aang take intimidation from On Ji's boyfriend, some school kids invite him to play a game of hide and explode. Aang accepts.
When he returns to the cave that night, Katara, Toph, and Sokka immediately round on him. Aang explains and expresses the wish to return, due to the experience of being treated normally than that his status deprives him of. Sokka immediately tries to shoot him down but Aang gains his support by showing him a picture of Fire Lord Ozai made of noodles and claiming they will be learning about a secret river that leads straight to the Fire Lord's palace in tomorrow. Sokka agrees.
Elsewhere, Zuko returns to Iroh's prison where he is confronted by the guard from the previous night. Upon recognizing Zuko, the guard yields and Zuko orders him to tell nobody of their encounter. In the cell Zuko has a one-sided conversation with Iroh in which he justifies his decision. Iroh is unresponsive, and Zuko storms out of the prison in anger.
The next day in school starts off badly for Aang. At the beginning of he is caught spoofing the oath to Fire Lord Ozai, thus persuading the teacher to give a pop quiz of the Fire Nation's great march of civilization. In the quiz, he speaks out at a question which states that the Air Nomads had a standing army. For the sake of staying out of trouble, however, he does not argue. In music Aang dances to the beat of a song the was performing, which the instructor reprimanded. The instructor stated that dancing and other forms of self-expression are highly discouraged in the mainland. However, in seeing Aang's point in a patriotic way, he grants Aang the privilege of marching in place. At the end of the day, after being complimented on his dancing by On Ji, her paranoid boyfriend confronts him with a burst of fire, burning his books. Aang effortlessly dodges each blow to the point that the other boy beats himself. The headmaster comes to the scene to find Aang standing with fists clenched in the center of a human circle, while On Ji's boyfriend lies on the ground half-conscience. The headmaster then asks Aang to tell his parents that they will have a conference about his "behavior."
Aang's "parents" (Sokka and Katara disguised as a young couple, Wang and Saphire Fire) speak with the headmaster. The Headmaster welcomes them and continues. He says if Aang slips one more time he will be sent to the coal mines. They eagerly reply in an effort to fit their disguises and move on. At the Fire Nation capital, on the outskirts, Zuko and Mai share a moment together before it is interrupted by Azula. Azula quickly uses an excuse to excuse Mai. Then she uses reverse psycology to see if Zuko visited Uncle Iroh. Zuko is caught and submits to Azula. Azula warns him that such acts as visiting Iroh will make others suspect he is plotting with him. She warns him not to do anything foolish.
Back in the cave, Sokka, with his mustache disguise, scolds Aang and tells him he must no longer attend the school. Aang protests and says he wants to help these kids who are forced to be servants to the Fire Lord. He wants to throw them a secret dance party. Once again he wins another argument with Sokka, and the four of them set up for the party in the cave.
The school kids arrive to the party in the cave and are wary of dancing for fear of who will catch them. There is dance music in the background, performed by "The Flameo's". Aang coaxes them to dance by sampling c Fire Nation dances. Impressed by his skills in dancing they begin to join him.
Zuko revisits Iroh in the prison tower. He brings him a komodo chicken meal as sort of an offering. But Zuko is still ignored, and in his frustration, pours out his heart to his uncle. Uncle says nothing still. Angered, he leaves the prison and Iroh sheds a tear.
In the cave, Aang teaches a partner dance to the group with On Ji. Katara notices and is jeleous. But then, Aang offers his hand to Katara who is nervously reluctant at first, but then Aang convinces her with a simple, "Take my hand". Before they danced, he whispered something in her ear. They preformed a synchronized martial arts dance similar to waterbending in front of everyone. Everyone watched in awe as they danced, and clapped at the end. The dance party resumed, but shortly thereafter, it is crashed when On Ji's boyfriend leads the headmaster to the cave. The headmaster shouts, "there he is!" and Aang makes a run for it. The other kids give Aang cover by wearing their waistbands on their foreheads. This confuses the headmaster and his guards, so Aang has the chance to escape. Aang waves goodbye and earthbends the back door shut.
Once safe, Toph and Sokka congratulate Aang on his dance party. Katara agrees and thanks him for the dance by kissing him on the cheek. Near the deserted coal mines, Zuko hires a giant, semi-metallic assassin with a special tattoo on his forehead to 'end' the Avatar. This man said nothing, but it was evident he accepted.
