(edit)
The City of Omashu resembles a ziggurat.
(edit)

(edit)
This episode marks the intial appearance of the unamed cabbage merchant who goes on to subsequently make cameos within several episodes in various locations as a series running gag.
(edit)
This episode is in the Avatar: The Last Airbender Book 1: Water, Volume 2 DVD, along with Imprisoned, The Spirit World (Winter Solstice Part 1) and Avatar Roku (Winter Solstice Part 2).
(edit)
Aang: I solved the question the same way I solved the challenges. As you said a long time ago, I had to open my brain to the possibilities. Bumi, you're a mad genius!
King Bumi: Oh, Aang. It's good to see you. You haven't changed a bit. Literally. (edit) Aang: Name's Bonzu Pipinpadaloxicopolis... the Third, and these are my grandkids.
Katara: Hi, June Pipinpadaloxicopolis. Nice to meet you. (edit) King Bumi: Aang, you have a difficult task ahead. The world has changed in the hundred years you've been gone. It's the duty of the Avatar to restore balance to the world by defeating Fire Lord Ozai. You have much to learn. You must master the four elements and confront the Fire Lord, and when you do, I hope you will think like a mad genius! And it looks like you're in good hands. You'll need your friends to help defeat the Fire Nation. (Momo lands on Aang's shoulder) And you'll need Momo, too! (edit) King Bumi: Heheh! The people in my city have gotten fat from too many feasts, so I hope you like your chicken with no skin.
Aang: Thanks, but I don't eat meat. (edit) Katara: Aang, do something, use your airbending.
Aang: Yeah, good idea, that will make us go even faster. (edit)

(edit)

(edit)
Rumpelstiltskin
Aang's final challenge, to guess the King's name, is very similar to the classic fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin, in which the main character must guess his name in order to save her son. (edit) The Three challenges Aang faces are very simmilar to the 3 tasks Harry faces in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. (edit) Earthbending is based on the martial arts style called Hung Gar. A form of Kung Fu, Hung Gar uses many techniques, such as solid stances, that is used for earthbending. In addition, Hung Gar is the most pervasive form of Kung Fu, just like the Earth Kingdom is the largest and most populous nation. (edit) The fact that the Cabbage Merchant is introduced in this episode could be a reference to the Lewis Carroll quotation "of cabbages and kings," from The Walrus And The Carpenter. (edit) Later on in the episode when Sokka's jennamite ring grows some more and creates an imbalance in weight on one of his sides and Sokka falls over its similar to the ending credits of the Flintstones where Fred orders the bronto ribs and the car topples over. (edit)
