Notes

add »
This episode was animated by Moi Animation. (edit)
This episode features a game of "Test your Strength" where you try to ring the bell and win. (edit)
At the end of this episode, the city is abandoned and the group is being attacked just like the end of The Chase. (edit)
In this episode, they repeatedly brought attention to Toph being blind and thus not able to read or write. (edit)
A cups & ball game is featured in this episode. (edit)

Quotes

add »
Sokka: (running at Aang) aaahhhhh SNEAK ATTACK!
Aang: (earthbends a wall in front of Sokka) Sokka, sneak attacks don't work if you yell it out loud. (edit)
Toph: A wanted poster! That's so great! The Runaway... I love my new nickname! Is there a picture of me? Does it look good?
Sokka: (considers the picture for a second) Well, yeah, actually, it does look pretty good... but, Toph, you're missing the point! (edit)
Aang: It's Sparky Sparky Boom Man!
Sokka: You know, I'm starting to think that name doesn't quite fit! (edit)
Sokka: Hey, I've got it, the perfect name for that guy. "Combustion Man"!
Toph: Good job, Sokka. Now let's get out of here before Combustion Man catches us!
Sokka: See? It fits so well! (edit)
Katara: What's this? (unfurls a sheet of paper)
Toph: I don't know! I mean, seriously, what's with you people?! I'm blind! (edit)

Trivia

add »
Look Closely: When the guy in the pebble scam drops the extra coins into the bag (already holding 20 silver pieces) that Toph is going to get if she wins, he only drops about five pieces. But Toph just said she would do it for 40 pieces so he didn't drop nearly enough in the bag. (edit)
At the end of the first try, the card shark attempted to stash the pebbles in his sleeves but he did so by just scooping the bowls backwards, flinging the pebbles into his sleeves with no attempt to hide what he was doing. (edit)
It's very unfair (and hypocritical) of Katara to constantly rebuke Toph for continuously scamming when Aang gave Katara an Avatar promise and the three presumed to break it; Aang doesn't even apologize. (edit)
When Katara prepares to bend at the beginning of the training session, the dark red stripe at the bottom of the red skirt is gone. (edit)
As seen in the beginning of the episode, Aang is now learning how to 'see' with his feet, just like Toph. Does this mean that he will only be the second person capable of performing metalbending? (edit)

Allusions

add »
In Celtic mythology, a hawk stands for recollection, cleansing/ clearing of guilt. This is especially relevant when Toph sends Hawky with a letter to her parents to settle matters with them. (edit)
Toph pretending to be hit by a carriage carrying a wealthy merchant is very similar to a real insurance scam called a Flopsy. (edit)
Sokka mentioning how he wouldn't have to talk to anyone with the use of a messenger hawk is possibly an allusion to the popular sentiment of today's text-messaging culture. (edit)
Toph says "Wait, it's a trap!" This seems to be a allusion to Admiral Ackbar from Star Wars: Episode VI quote. This quote has also spawned a internet meme of sorts. (edit)
Katara's big scam is very similar to the 1966 movie The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The movie has a small plot of the main character Blondie traveling town to town to collect the bounty on a wanted man. Then later freeing the man, and splitting the reward. (edit)
