Notes

Translations:
-The scroll which Zhao finds in the library means 'Moon Spirit and Ocean Spirit' and 'Northern Water Tribe' (edit)
Character Debuts: Koh (edit)
According to the creators, Koh will return sometime during season 3. (edit)
Hahn's attempt to defeat Admiral Zhao (whom he calls "Admiral Choi") fails drastically as he is thrown over the board. According to the DVD Commentary, the writers had forgotten about Hahn until Aaron Ehasz, head writer and writer of this episode, pitched the idea of Zhao tossing him overboard. (edit)
According to the Avatar Escape From the Spirit World online event, the brown-haired woman's face that Koh possesses is a Southern Tribe woman named Ummi. She was the soon to be wife Avatar Kuruk, the last Northern Water Tribe native Avatar seen briefly in The Avatar State. On the day of their wedding, Koh pulled her into the Spirit pond, disappearing her away to the Spirit World to punish Kuruk for his past arrogance. (edit)

Quotes

add »
Koh: Tui and La, your Moon and Ocean, have always circled each other in an eternal dance. They balance each other: push and pull, life and death, good and evil, yin and yang. (edit)
Yue: There's no hope now, it's over.
Aang (enters the Avatar State): No, it's not over. (edit)
Yue: Don't worry, Prince Zuko can't be getting to far in this weather.
Katara: I'm not worried they will get away in the blizzard, I'm worried that they won't. (edit)
Arnook: The spirits gave me a vision when Yue was born. I saw a beautiful, brave young woman become the moon spirit. I knew this day would come.
Sokka: You must be proud.
Arnook: So proud. And sad. (edit)
Sokka: They’re not gonna die in this blizzard. If we know anything, it’s that Zuko never gives up. They’ll survive, and we’ll find them. (edit)

Trivia

add »
While Aang is pleading with Zhao, Momo's fur reverses its colors. (edit)
Before Yue begins her flashback, the wind shifts her hair ornaments, revealing her lack of ears. (edit)
At the very beginning of the episode when Katara is fighting the boy, her animation isn't the greatest and her necklace is drawn wrong. the silver part is completely on the black strip, instead of its actual hanging state. (edit)
As Hahn enters Admiral Zhao's ship he says, "Admiral Choi, prepare to meet your fate." consequently Choi in Korean means governor, high, superior, lofty or towering. (edit)
When Aang goes into the spirit world, he walks towards Koh's cave. Half a second later, a monkey suddenly appears on a rock near the cave. (edit)

Allusions

add »
The monkey seen mediating beneath the tree in this episode seems to be another allusion to Buddhism, this time being the tradition of trying to reach enlightment through mediatation. (edit)
The sequence in which Pakku performs the whirpool type against a platoon of soldiers is based off a still-life of an unidentified past Avatar from the unaired pilot. The technique was also referred to as the "water snake", in accordance to the waterspout's constantly shifting movements. (edit)
Koizilla
Despite its Miyazaki origin, the creators state on the audio commentary that they decided to nickname the Ocean Spirit's monster form "Koizilla", an obvious take on the Godzilla (Gojira) legacy.
(edit)
When Aang stated in the previous episode that the spirits will unleash a "crazy amazing spirit attack on the Fire Nation," he was actually foreshadowing what would take place in this one. Aang hinted that the spirits would hault the Fire Nation siege, which is precisely what happened when he became one with the Ocean Spirit. (edit)
Koh the Face stealer seems to based on Japanese traditional Noh masks used in acting, to imatate a face. (edit)
