Notes

add »
This episode is in the Avatar: The Last Airbender Book 1: Water, Volume 3 DVD, along with Jet,The Great Divide, and The Storm. (edit)
This episode marks the first time Zuko attempts to "sweet-talk" someone into revealing Aang's location. He tries to get Katara to sympathize with his quest for honor and even tempts her with her mother's necklace. (edit)
Enemy Debut: The Pirates of the Earth Kingdom Waters (Affiliated Nation Unknown)
A crew of 7 men who "buy" and sell things to residents of all nations. Led by a Pirate Captain, who also has a reptilian parrot. (edit)
Aang buys a bison whistle, which allows him to conveniently call Appa from virtually anywhere when the gang is in trouble. (edit)
The way Zuko breathes fire in this episode is all most exactly the way his father did while Roku told Aang about Sozin's comet in Avatar Roku (Winter Solstice, Part 2). (edit)

Quotes

Zuko: Tell me where he is, and I won't hurt you or your brother.
Katara: Go jump in the river!
Zuko: Try to understand, I need to capture him to restore something I've lost. My honor. Perhaps in exchange I can restore something you've lost. (edit)
Katara: Besides, who needs that stupid scroll anyway?
Sokka: Is that really how you feel? (Sokka shows the Waterbending scroll but doesn't give it to her)
Katara: The scroll!
Sokka: First, what did you learn?
Katara: Stealing is wrong. (After she gets it) Unless it's from pirates!
(Aang laughs)
Aang: Good one, Katara. (edit)
Katara: Calm down. It's going to be okay. If you want, I can try and teach you some of the stuff I know.
Aang: You'd do that?
(edit)
Pirate Captain: Bleeding hog-monkeys!
Zuko: Haha!
Zuko: Hey! That's my boat! (edit)
Sokka: It was hard enough when you were just an airbender. (edit)

Trivia

add »
When Aang is in the smoke trying to find Sokka, he's shouting for him and finally bends the smoke away before pulling it back after seeing a bunch of pirates. Look closely at Aang's mouth as he says "Uhhh, never mind I'll find you." The words don't match up to what he says. This is the only recording mistake in the season, and so far in the show (edit)
This is the first episode where Aang waterbends without the help of the Avatar State. (edit)
The stick Aang gives to Sokka to clean Appa was not there until Aang picks it up. (edit)
In the smoke screen made by the pirates, when Zuko ducks back to avoid the pirate captain's sword, his burnt ear is normal. (edit)
Zuko places the scroll between his belt and his back, but while he is fighting the pirate captain and his back is to the screen, the scroll is gone. When one of the pirates steals it later, the scroll is again behind Zuko. (edit)

Allusions

add »
Given the appearance of the lotus tile and its importance later on suggests that it is based on the Dharmacakra. (edit)
Many of the waterbending movements come from the martial arts style Tai Chi.

Also, in Tai Chi, stances are very important just like how Aang told Katara to shift her weight through her stances. Some of the stances in the move Katara was trying to learn are the same stances in Tai Chi forms such as the Bow and Sit Stance and the Ding Bow Stances.
(edit)
The sequence in which Momo is chased by the Reptile bird is taken from a similar sequence that occurred between Momo and a pet Dragon hawk in the unaired pilot episode. (edit)
When Zuko threatens to burn the waterbending scroll, it draws air to when Elizabeth Swann threatens to drop the medallion over the edge of the ship in Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of The Black Pearl. The intial exchange of dialog between Zuko and Katara regarding her necklace also quotes from Elizabeth and the pirates. Also, Katara tells Momo she owes him "a whole bushel of apples," another line from Pirates (where the pirate captain promises to "eat a whole bushel of apples," when he is free of his curse). (edit)
Pirate: I hope that lemur of yours has nine lives!
Reference to the well-known superstition that cats have nine lives. (edit)
