An acquaintance of Cash's, Sam Hatfield, has broken out of jail in Redwing and is on the run. Injured, he takes refuge in the Golden Gate casino and informs Cash that he had stolen money under a stone in the jail floor. He asks Cash to get the bills before the greedy sheriff discovers them and offers to give the casino owner $10,000 of the loot for his efforts.

Jeff informs Cash that the money is no doubt marked and offers to go to Redwing himself to retrieve it, disguised as the currently imprisoned outlaw Curly Stonehaus. Cash joins in the plot to get "Curly" into the jail by posing as U.S. Marshal Perkins. All seems to be going smoothly with the digging until another wanted outlaw, Big Lou Hobart, is arrested during a poker game and takes a reluctant "Curly" along with him when his gang stages a jail break. Things become even more complicated when the real Curly's girlfriend, Tranquility Smith, happens to be at the outlaw's camp.

The hidden money is finally recovered with the help of one Spot the dog, who "only barks at lawmen."
