Notes

add »
This episode is episode 16 on the Batman: The Animated Series Volume 2 DVD. (edit)
Kyodai Ken is one of the few Batman villain to discover Batman's identity and faced Batman unmasked. The only others to know of Batman's identitty is Ra's Al Ghul and his daughter Taila. (It should be noted that Dr. Hugo Strange discovered Batman's secret identity through his mind reading machine in "The Strange Secret of Bruce Wayne," but Batman foiled this by having Dick Grayson pose as him and appearing by his side.) (edit)
The fatal touch Kyodai tried using is called "o-nemuri", meaning "big sleep" (as in eternal sleep), according to Batman. (edit)
The forbidden martial art that was at the heart of this episode is called "kiba-no-hoko" or "the way of the fang". (edit)
Kairi later appeared as an old woman in Batman Beyond's "Curse of the Kobra" two parter. (edit)

Quotes

add »
Kyodai Ken: The O-Nemuri touch?! How could you withstand it?
Batman: It's all over, Kyodai! Your precious technique doesn't work! (edit)
Sensei Yoru: If you see Batman, tell him I have great respect for him.
Bruce: Why? He's as much a ninja as Kyodai was.
Sensei Yoru: Not so. Batman offered to help his adversary and a lesser man would have used the knowledge of the O-Nemuri touch against his opponent. Batman is the essence of Samurai, Wayne-san. You would do well to remember that. (edit)
Kyodai Ken: Once again, you approach unseen, dark one. You would have made a good ninja.
Batman: I would prefer to be a Samurai.
Kyodai Ken: But you are like me, a warrior of the night.
Batman: So it would seem. (edit)

Trivia

add »
In Bruce's hotel room a dragon statute used to hold incense repeatedly disappears and changes in color and shape. (edit)
Yuro is said to be the great-great-great grandson of the man who invented "the way of the fang". That hardly seems like a long enough lineage to span the five hundred years since the fighting style was invented. (edit)

Allusions

add »
Sensei Yuro: Kyodai returned to Japan in defeat.
Bruce Wayne: He was beaten by Batman...

This alludes to the episode "Night of the Ninja", where Bruce first fought Kyodai as Batman, and later defeated him as Bruce Wayne, though it was reported to Summer Gleeson that Batman defeated him to protect Bruce's secret identity. (edit)
