The license plate on Randa Duane's auto-driving car is "RUR", another nod to the Capek play.
(edit)
This episode marks the first appearance of Barbara Gordon.
(edit)
HARDAC is an acronym for "Holographic Analytical Reciprocating Digital Computer."
(edit)
William Sanderson (Karl Rossum) also played the role of sympathetic android worker J.F. Sebastian in the SF classic Blade Runner.
(edit)
The name of the character "Karl Rossum" is almost certainly a nod to "Rossum's Universal Robots", the 1921 Karl Capek play that gave us the word "robot". Robot comes from the Czech word 'robota', which originally referred to time spend working without remuneration on a nobleman's fields -- peasants were required to do this work.

Bruce: Well, since you won't tell me what you're working on, Karl, maybe I can charm the details out of your lovely assistant?...
Randa: Well... you can try... (edit) Alfred: Sound as if the human race will become quite expendable. Except for butlers, of course.
Batman: Of course. (edit) Alfred: I do wish you wouldn't be so rough with your toys, Master Bruce. (edit)

Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey
The front of the HARDAC computer is clearly influenced by the HAL computer of Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey (i.e., menacing, red-eye panel and a calm, stoic voice). (edit)
