King Philip of France sends Chatillon, his ambassador, to King John of England to demand his kingdom for Prince Arthur, the son of John's elder brother Geoffrey. John responds by declaring war on France and leads an army over the English Channel.
The English and French armies join forces to attack the town of Angiers. A peace is arrived at when the citizens of the town suggest a compromise - Lewis, Dauphin of France, to marry King John's niece, Blanch, and Arthur to be given the Duchy of Brittany. But Arthur's mother, Constance, is furious and says Philip has betrayed her son, while the Pope decides to excommunicate King John for disobedience to the Pope - and King Philip too, unless he breaks the agreement with John.
Sir Richard Plantagenet, a bastard son of King Richard I, kills the Duke of Austria, Arthur is captured and John sends him to England, with orders to Hubert de Burgh that Arthur is to be blinded.
Hubert fakes Arthur's death, John loses the support of his barons, Arthur is really killed while trying to escape, John gives in to the demands of the Pope, the Dauphin invades England, John dies (apparently poisoned) in an orchard, the Dauphin arranges a peace settlement, and the throne of England goes to the young Prince Henry, now King Henry III.
