In the 1965 Dell paperback novelization of "BEWITCHED" (written by Al Hine and adapted from the first seven TV scripts), Samantha's maiden name is revealed as "Dobson". But this doesn't make sense because, in the chapter where Darrin meets Endora for the first time, the line she says to him about "you'd never be able to pronounce (my last name)" is taken directly from the original TV script. Obviously, Al Hine was given these first-draft scripts and a deadline; he managed to weave a good novel, but because he didn't get the one where Samantha's father, Maurice, is introduced, he had Endora musing over the fact that Samantha's father, "John Dobson", was burned at the stake in York [England] in 1538. And there were other "irregularities", including the names of Samantha's neighbors {obviously, "Marge Tyler" became "another person" in the final shooting script, I forget WHO} and the eventual "truce" and warm friendship {!!!} between Darrin and Endora at the end of the novel. I could go on, but you get the idea. The point is, in this novel, Samantha HAS a last name- but you'll never hear of it again after you put the book down.
