I don't remember ever hearing it.
Have they ever mentioned Endora's last name? In theory I guess it would be the same. |

Well, in the episode when Darrin meets Endora, he tries to get her last name, but she says that he'll never be able to pronounce it. So, as far as I know, we never find out.

Interestingly, after Endora's declaration, "You'd never be able to pronounce it. Just call me "Endora," (we hear the character's name for the first time in this episode) everybody except Samantha and Tabitha calls her "Endora." You usually never heard a family surname of the witch/warlock characters. One notable exception is in the first season, episode 11, "It Takes One To Know One." In that story Samantha recognizes "Janine Fleur" as the wiley witch, "Sarah Baker." John Martin

In the 1965 Dell paperback novelization of "BEWITCHED" (written by Al Hine and adapted from the first seven TV scripts), Samantha's maiden name is revealed as "Dobson". But this doesn't make sense because, in the chapter where Darrin meets Endora for the first time, the line she says to him about "you'd never be able to pronounce (my last name)" is taken directly from the original TV script. Obviously, Al Hine was given these first-draft scripts and a deadline; he managed to weave a good novel, but because he didn't get the one where Samantha's father, Maurice, is introduced, he had Endora musing over the fact that Samantha's father, "John Dobson", was burned at the stake in York [England] in 1538. And there were other "irregularities", including the names of Samantha's neighbors {obviously, "Marge Tyler" became "another person" in the final shooting script, I forget WHO} and the eventual "truce" and warm friendship {!!!} between Darrin and Endora at the end of the novel. I could go on, but you get the idea. The point is, in this novel, Samantha HAS a last name- but you'll never hear of it again after you put the book down. |

Is Dobson the same deal as Gilligan Willie?

The series flip-flopped that Samantha and her family either had last names or not, but some of them did; recall Franklin BLODGETT or Clyde FARNSWORTH?
I made up a last name for Samantha on my bio for her on my site. It also has an indebt analysis of her powers and a history of where she is today. |

Samantha's maiden name is never mentioned. It is interesting that Endora claims that Darrin could never pronounce it. It makes it seem as though it is too old.
However, other witches like Sarah Baker and Dr. Bombay have last names. I forget Dr. Bombay's first name, but I am almost positive I heard it mentioned. More interesting is how American law is not considered. Samantha's maiden name would have had to be on the marriage license. Plus, how could 2 people get married knowing so much about each other, but not last names? Darrin, being the suspicious guy he was, definitely should have been weirded out by that. We can assume that magic was used to prevent all this wondering, but still, it seems odd. Think about school projects for Tabitha and Adam...I know I had to study my heritage in elementary school. How long can the family possibly go without the name being mentioned? |

Well, that was the 70s and I doubt they did much family heritage stuff back then. Plus it could have been made up. And was it Samantha's maiden name that Endora meant he couldn't pronounce or Endora's last name? I believe the question was about Endora's last name and she says "you couldn't pronounce it". You would think that it should be the same but maybe Endora was a feminist who kept her maiden name? lol Also, since Endora and Maurice were technically separated (but not divorced apparently) maybe she wasn't using her married name any more. ???? There are several continuity issues with this show, but I love it anyway! |

Samantha didn't have to use her last name because her entire mortal history would have been made up from her birth certificate to her social security number, magic must have been used to create a history for her. Darin wouldn't care about her last name because I don't recall him asking questions like the history of Witches/Warlocks and how they came about, were they mortals @ one point etc. If he wasn't curious about these bigger questions then something like Sam's last name wouldn't have mattered to him I suspect. |

Shoot, this is mild! Some boards on this site (tv.com) just crack me up with how much people know about the show and how literal they can be with it. It's like the people who know every character in Star Wars, even the ones who were only on screen for a second. lol |
