"Sins of the Mother"
Written by: Melissa Rosenberg & Hans Tobeason
Directed by: Jeff Woolnough
Just as Dinah’s getting her crime fighting legs, her mother, the infamous Black Canary, comes to town to take her away from this way of life. Carolyn Lance left behind her days of being Black Canary and now she wants the girl that she deserted to do the same. Dinah wants nothing to do with her. She wants to work with Barbara and Helena and hone her skills into a force to be reckoned with. Unfortunately leaving New Gotham with Dinah isn’t going to be that easy. Black Canary’s biggest foe has a price on her head and has heard that she’s back in town. Now as Carolyn looks for her daughter, Hawke and his band of not-so-merry men track her.
Dinah can’t believe the mother that left her on a neighbor’s doorstep suddenly wants to take her away from her friends and her calling. So, she heads to the one place where she knows she’ll be accepted – No Man’s Land. But she’s only there for a short while before her mother comes looking for her. Carolyn explains why being a super hero isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and promises to never leave her again. Dinah doesn’t believe her and takes off yet again. As Carolyn goes after her, she’s apprehended by Hawke and his thugs.
Dinah returns to the clock tower and discovers her mother’s missing. Now she wants to help. She can’t believe the things she said to Carolyn. She has to save her. Barbara grudgingly agrees to let her go, as long as Huntress follows just in case back up is needed. Dinah finds Hawke’s lair and tries to save the woman she barely knows. Unfortunately, she’s not strong enough and Hawke captures her, too. But Dinah has discovered a new power – telekinesis - and uses it to unlock her mother’s evil collar. With her voice free, Carolyn sicks her Canary yell on Hawke and his henchmen and Dinah gets away. Unfortunately, Hawke gets a couple rounds from his automatic weapon off, knocks over a few barrels of gasoline, and the whole place goes up in flames with Canary and Hawke still inside.
Dinah never got to know the woman who was her mother. She’ll never get to ask questions about crime fighting or how to harness her powers for good. But she got to see her for a few short hours and hear the most important thing a mother can tell her daughter – she’s proud of her and Dinah made the right decision. Dinah can continue in her mother’s footsteps knowing that somewhere up above, Carolyn is looking down on her daughter and smiling.
