The episode starts out with the Wurgel and Sparks family arriving for the first day of the project to put on their make up for the very first time. As soon as they're done, they reunite to see each other as the other race. Brian, the black father of the Sparks, goes to the golf course and has a conversation with a white man. Rose, who is white daughter of the Wurgels, goes to South Central with her escort in her make up. Brian goes to a golf pro shop for shoes where he gets excellent service from the attendent.
The Wurgel family arrives and meets the Sparks family at the LA house that they will be spending 6 weeks with. The parents, except Renee, had positive views about each. Rose was nervous that her parents might say the wrong thing to the Sparks since they weren't around black people. Brian broke the ice by giving Bruno, the white father of the Wurgels, tips on being black. A discussion about race occured after.
The parents went to a focus group to have a discussion on race with the race that they swapped with. As the black focus group occured, Renee and Brian watched Carmen and Bruno from behind a two way mirror. As the white focus group occured, Carmen and Bruno watched Renee and Brian from behind the two way mirror.
The next day each family was in their make up. Brian went to a bar, applied to be the bartender, and got the job. Rose went to the mall, met the leaders of a slam poetry group, and received an invitation to join. Bruno went to a car dealership and felt he received the same attention he would received if he was white.
Rose goes to the slam poetry group for the first time. She felt like a lamb in a lion's den. As she heard the others speak, she became nervous as she thought they were speaking from their heart about being black. After Rose's poetry, she met with some critisms about her choice of big words. Nick, in his white make up, goes to an Etiquette class with Rose, who is without make up. Nick feels he doesn't see a point to this racism thing.
Brian gets into a conversation into a white man about the community. The white man felt that it was the last community to be white and that it was the safest place to bring his kids. Rose was getting even more nervous from the second day of her slam poetry class, which had her competing against another classmate in a game and she won.
Bruno and Brian get into another conversation about racism. Brian says that what Bruno says about racism pisses him off. They both go to a clothing store where they have different views on the same situation.
