Dr Sam Bliss, investigating a cure for the common cold at a leading research centre, learns of the Duboys family, members of which have been exceptionally long-lived. Bliss decides to track down survivors, hoping that they might carry a gene that could help extend the human lifespan, but stumbles upon a bizarre series of murders, in which the victims have been bled to death.
