The police are invited to an old-time charity dance. Ben takes a St. Davids Officer, Shelley Piper. However her separated husband, Peter Baynes, a sergeant and Inspector Falcon-Price's "golden boy" believes he has ownership of his ex-wife and, when he is very drunk, starts a fight with Ben. Tom and Falcon-Price find Ben in the toilets having just punched Baynes.
Falcon-Price naturally believes Baynes and Ben knows that his past history of violence (e.g. when he punched an officer and got demoted) is not working in his favour. Baynes agrees to not press charges but Ben knows that Falcon-Price thinks he should be suspended. Tom, Jo and the rest believe Ben however, who says he was just defending himself. Shelley tells Ben that all Baynes wants is to continously be seen as the good guy in the Inspector's eyes.
Ben discovers that Baynes may have a psychological problem. He often parks outside the house Shelley lives in with her father for hours, or spies on her. Ben asks Shelley to call him next time it happens and soon enough it does. Ben is already angry when he discovers his headlights were smashed. Falcon-Price is Baynes' alibi and Ben thinks that it is a false alibi. Ben heads out to Shelley's and finds that Baynes has been trying to get into Shelley's house. Ben goes looking for him and soon Shelley's father and Tom finds Baynes lying unconcious and bleeding on the ground and Ben standing above him with a piece of piping.
Baynes is in a coma and may die and Shelley and her father can't assure the police Ben didn't do it. He claims that he was carrying the piping because he was unarmed and he found Baynes already like that. Falcon-Price wants Ben out of the force but Tom convinces him to let it rest a while. But Ben mistakenly believes Tom's warning as showing that Tom is siding with the others.
Soon, Ben looks like an idiot. It wasn't Baynes who smashed his headlights, but then Tom and PJ reopen the assault case and discover it was Shelley's father, anxious to rid the world of the man who made Shelley's life hell. Ben's record is clean again and Falcon-Price has to issue a sort of apology. Ben will continue in the force, but won't continue his relationship with Shelley. Add a recap »
