Davey is an orphaned Yute who was abandoned by his tribe. Both of his parents were killed in a battle between the tribe and the white man. The Cartwrights helped care for Davey since his childhood, and he has now become a ranch hand at the Ponderosa.
Ben and the Yutes are finalizing negotiations for a treaty that allows the tribe their space. Davey accompanies them into Virginia City, where the treaty is to be signed, and falls in love at first sight with beautiful Bright Moon, the daughter of Chief Lone Spear.
At the saloon, two drunken cowboys named Jud and Skinner hurl racial slurs at Davey (who ignores them). Outside, they start a fight with Davey when they try to make a pass at Bright Moon. Little Joe and Hoss quickly even the odds. Another Yute, White Wolf, insists that the white man and his tribe cannot co-exist and also calls Davey, in essence, a "half breed" who is "neither white nor Indian" and who means to marry an Indian maiden meant for someone else. Especially troubling to White Wolf – the fact that Davey talks, works and lives like the white man. Davey's response is essentially, "So what?"
The romance between Davey and Bright Moon grows into true love, and Davey announces his intentions to Lone Star. The chief gives his blessings, but White Wolf remains skeptical.
Later that night, Davey and Bright Moon talk under the moonlight, when White Wolf insists they fight to the death for her hand in marriage. Both they and Bright Moon are unaware they have an audience – Jud and Skinner, the drunks from before. Davey wins but will not kill White Wolf. White Wolf, conceding to a fair fight, agrees to honor the marriage.
White Davey and Bright Moon walk off, Jud hurls a knife into White Wolf's back, killing him. He and Skinner quickly replace their knife with Davey's discarded one and plan to frame him for murder.
One of Roy's deputies (NOT Clem) comes to the Ponderosa looking to bring Davey in for questioning in White Wolf's slaying. Jud and Skinner apparently had told authorities Davey killed White Wolf in cold blood. Hoss rides to the Yutes' ground to explain to Davey what is going on and that everything's going to be alright. However, the deputy (accompanied by Jud and Skinner) ride onto the Yutes' ground, nearly causing a riot that Hoss says will get everyone killed.
Lone Star demands to know what is going on, when the deputy explains that Davey has been accused of murder. Sure of his innocence, he questions both Davey and Bright Moon, who tell the truth. Under Yute customs, Davey is to fight one of his accusers (so as to reveal who is telling the truth). Davey gets the upper hand in his fight with Skinner, who rats out Jud as White Wolf's true assailant. Both Jud and Skinner are arrested.
In the coda, Hoss stands witness to the marriage ceremony between Davey and Bright Moon, and the two live on their hunting ground happily ever after.
