Rome almost does not graduate after an altercation with Mr. Slater, his science teacher and senior advisor, who suspends him for allegedly stealing. Rome earns his diploma in spite of Slater and ends up riding his motorcycle on stage to collect it.

A music promoter offers Boone and Rome an opportunity to appear on "National Sockhop." Merit refuses to sign Boone's contract and Boone forges his name. Merit has a heart attack and Boone decides not to go after all. He believes there will be other chances.
