The song played when the parents enter the law firm, is a song from the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz. It's played throughout the movie whenever the Wicked Witch of the West appears. (edit)

Alan: I don't presume to know whether this is a good war or not, Denny. But there can be no dispute it's a complex one, one that we as a citizenry, as patriots, need to be talking about.
Denny: Here's all you need to know, put me in charge. I'll win the damn thing.
Alan: No doubt. Do you think the army would let two flamingos enlist?
Denny: Don't ask, don't tell. (edit)
Alan: (after losing the case) I hope at least somebody heard your screams.
Cassie: If not, then maybe they heard yours. Thank you. (edit)
Alan: Private Elliot was for the war. Personally, I was against it. Then I was for it. Then I was against it again. But that's just me. I'm a flip-flopper. (edit)
Shirley: Let me read you something by Martin Niemoeller, a German pastor who opposed the Nazis. "In Germany, they came first for the communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time, there was no one left to speak up." (edit)
Denise: It's just, though they are together for the purpose of this motion, they're not so much together. And I think having two lawyers, in case there are conflicts.
Shirley: Yes, and you think the senior partner of the firm should be doing this because...
Denise: It'll be fun. Plus, you promised I'd get to try cases with you. (edit)

Trivia

During the "Burning Times", starting in about 1480 in England & Europe and lasting for hundreds of years, 10's of thousands of people were persecuted and executed as 'witches', many were burned. In Salem, Massachusetts, however, it's strictly myth that there was a similar situation. While there were charges of witchcraft which did result in the execution of fewer than 15 people overall, all of them were hanged; one, a man named Corey, was crushed to death by stones. There were no witch burnings, ever, in the United States. (edit)

Sara: I’m not trying to be disrespectful. I just wanted to feel hot.
Her costume is meant to be that of Condoleezza Rice, the United States Secretary of State when this episode first aired. (edit)
Alan Shore: Denny, you look pretty in pink.
James Spader, who portrays Alan Shore, appeared in the 1986 feature film, Pretty in Pink, which also starred Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, Harry Dean Stanton and Jon Cryer. (edit)

"Series classic"
It's sad, it's engaging, it's hillarious; it's Boston Legal, and television, at it's best.
